I have a new post up over at dotmoms in which I write about my love for playing Monopoly with my children, which I love almost as much as gouging out my eyeballs with a blunt instrument.

Maybe you have to actually see the baby shaking his Welbuturin rattle to fully appreciate the humour. (I added that “u” in there just for Annalise. I feel so much more worldly with the extra “u”. Can I just adopt the usage of the “u” or would that make me a poser like Madonna with the fake British accent?)

Nah! My third child had her very own Celexa rattle so you didn’t scare me at all. (and I shudder to think what would have happened had I not taken it) Oh, and I’m with you on the eye-gouging, only here it’s Candyland and Cootie. Over and over and over…

Not to mention my Mom is a world-class scrabble player and she never let me win growing-up. I think I’ve been scarred for life. Besides, Monopoly takes half a day to play. Whose got that kind of time?

August 31st, 2005 at 8:05 amMy twin and I always played Monopoly with lightening speed - it drives Brent nuts now that I can’t play a game without speeding through it.
By the way, I like to say “colour” and “whilst” instead of “while.”

I dislike boardgames too; ours are still all boxed and lurking in the cupboard under the stairs, even though the kids keep asking where they are.
August 31st, 2005 at 9:04 amI have no patience for board games too, and honestly, Monopoly is the absolute WORST. Nothing is so long and drawn out and boring. My husband always wants to play it and I always conveniently get a stomach or head ache around that time.

But it also wanted me to change Wellbuturin (which I DID spell incorrectly, btw) to elevator. So what does it know?
August 31st, 2005 at 12:49 pmI too hate the fact that some board games drag on forever, but I am always up for a game of Scrabble.
As for cheaters, when my family gets together, they always play UNO… and talk about cheaters! Even my 62 year old mom cheats. We have to put a baking pan in front of the glass of the microwave or she’ll look at our cards!
I think it is fine you “let” your kids beat you. When I was a kid, I always thought I was so smart when I beat my mom and dad at cards or checkers. Trust me, they will appreciate that… just don’t let them win all the time (or they’ll be onto your game!).

August 31st, 2005 at 1:47 pmI’m not big on board games either, althought I admit that I still like Life and Clue, but my kids are too young for those games yet. They’re more in the Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, Hi Ho Cherry-O age. I always feel like I spend more time telling them whose turn it is or reminding them that we’re playing a game and not whatever other thing they’re trying to do with the pieces or discarded cards, but THEY are the ones who wanted to play the game!
August 31st, 2005 at 2:15 pmMy brothers would never let me join in their epic board game sagas. Monopoly, Clue and then Backgammon and Chess. As a result, not only did I never learn how to play Chess and even Checkers, I loathe the very thought of playing. My middle child is always asking me to get down “a box game.” It’s never any fun but I’m hoping once we don’t have a little one who’s always playing ambush, things will get better. I’d truly like to overcome this adversion so family “game night” wouldn’t turn into family fight night. Oh yeah, never learned how to play tennis either, but boy was I an awesome ball girl. Please protect your younger children from older siblings who know how to manipulate the eager to please!
