And I probably did use my visa card
August 15, 2006
Binoculars purchased for son’s 9th birthday: $150
House with large open yard perfect for star gazing: more than sane people would spend
Four Old Navy sweatshirts for me and my three oldest sons, worn on top of our pajamas: $25 a piece
Watching the Perseids meteor shower in the middle of the night, laying on our backs in the wet grass: priceless
There are some things money can’t buy. Finally getting to be the fun parent is one of them.

Aw, man! I mean to watch that every year, and I never have. What night did you go out?
August 15th, 2006 at 9:51 pmAWWW! What a cool memory for all of you.
August 16th, 2006 at 12:25 amWhat are you talking about? You are definitely the cool parent.
August 16th, 2006 at 12:46 amWhat a lovely evening!
August 16th, 2006 at 1:23 amWe watched them. Unfortunately the conversation still centered around bodily functions. They said it was great though. I suggested we just sit inside next time and discuss bodily functions.
August 16th, 2006 at 5:01 amThat sounds like one of those amazing nights they will remember forever and ever. You are SUCH a fun parent.
August 16th, 2006 at 5:12 amYou just brought back the memory of me and two of the kids out on our deck in Minnesota watching a meteor shower, wrapped in layers and layers of blankets but still freezing because it was below zero that night and the deck was literally sucking our body heat out, LOL. This was probably 3 years ago… I had forgotten about it.
… what an awesome memory. Thank You.
August 16th, 2006 at 5:18 amWe spend many nights in August sleeping out on the lawn. We live on an island and there have been many a night when the deer are hangin’ with us.
August 16th, 2006 at 5:33 amWhat a great time for you.
that is so sweet! you are such a great mom!
August 16th, 2006 at 6:21 amThat sounds wonderful! What a great memory.
August 16th, 2006 at 6:28 amYou are super cool!
August 16th, 2006 at 6:28 amGood for you! Especially since I’m the crappy mom who got frustrated with the kids staying up and sent them to bed at 9:30 instead. Course I think we live too close to major cities to see anything anyways (stars? what stars?).
August 16th, 2006 at 6:31 amI didnt realize they were this week, we try to watch some of them when we can. One year we went out for one of the best displays i have ever seen, took the kids and stayed out all night, near a cornfield watching them just shoot across the sky.
August 16th, 2006 at 6:47 amMy son and I watched meteor showers about 6 years ago (he was 10). I woke him up at midnight and we layed outside on our backs! It was a great memory and I’m so glad I did it.
August 16th, 2006 at 6:50 amThank you for the reminder. We set our alarms last year to go out and watch. I didn’t know it was happening again. The past year has flown by.
I would classify you as a very fun mom.

August 16th, 2006 at 9:36 amsays that it should still be going until the 22nd. Hopefully we didn’t totally miss the boat.
Althoug I could always have my husband stand on the shed and turn a flashlight on and off rapidly…
although
sorry. I couldn’t let it go…
August 16th, 2006 at 9:37 amOh, how lovely to be able to do that - I don’t even know if we can see meteor showers from here…I bet the children loved it.
August 16th, 2006 at 10:27 amcan you remind us *before* the meteor shower next year?
sounds like a wonderful evening. I wish we had seen it.
August 16th, 2006 at 10:42 amThat sounds like an awesome time!
August 16th, 2006 at 12:20 pmHow fun! I remember doing that with my Dad. He woke me up at around 4am, and we went out into the backyard and watched. He had made bacon and fried eggs to eat as well.
You just made a memory for your kids!
August 16th, 2006 at 1:09 pmMy dad is huge into astronomy. I vividly rememeber all four of us in our sleeping bags on the back patio to watch a lunar eclipse when I was about 10. We also bundled up and went out to the front yard to watch the Leonids that November.
I’m 30 and I still talk about that.
