And On The Seventh Day

July 2, 2008

He smiled.

swing

Propelled by his steady diet of narcotics mixed with gingerale, coke, popsicles, and ice cream.

A friend called me earlier to ask how he was doing. I told her he was on the upswing, literally.

He was being a rather demanding pain in the butt. You know how kids behave when they are in that period between being sick and well. And you wonder if you should give them the tylenol to make them feel well enough to whine at you or hold off so they will lay silently on the couch for a little while longer. Don’t deny it, you think the same thing.

This time it was a relief that he was well enough to complain about things like the color of the popsicles available, how close someone is sitting next to him on the couch, or THINKING of sitting next to him on the couch, and the fact that he hasn’t been to play miniature golf in like TEN YEARS and that is SO UNFAIR. Especially since he is only seven years old. And THAT is no fair either. Why didn’t I borned him sooner?

But you know what? After the past week, I’ll take it.

On Sunday night when we got home from the ER, I brought him up to bed. I tucked him in and his big brown eyes welled up with tears. He didn’t want to sleep alone. He also didn’t want to sleep in my bed. And that was why at 1am I lifted his mattress up over my head, carried it down the hall and into my room. I made him a little bed right next to me.

He just told me he wants to stay in there forever. Awwwwww, that is so sweet. But so not going to happen.

He also says he is never taking his hospital bracelet off.

    Chris,

I am so very happy to read (and see!) that he is feeling better. I was thinking of him and checking for updates, and then feeling like a s*it because obviously if he was sick, you weren’t going to be updating. lol

I hope he stays all better.

He looks so sweet and peaceful in that first pic. He has the ability to complain? Not the angel in the picture!

  15. Bonna says:

Glad to hear he is doing much better. I agree with everyone else, there is nothing worse than having a sick kid - no matter the age. Especially when all you can do is wait and watch and pray that it becomes a distant memory very quickly.

    Glad he’s feeling better :)

  17. Catherine says:

Wonderful news. You must feel like you can finally take a deep breath. Between you & Susan, you’ve had a bad run of boy troubles. I hope this is the end of it for the summer, for the year.

  21. Carolynn from Western Australia says:

I am so relieved that he is so much better now. I sincerely hope neither you nor he have to ever go through anything like this again nor any of your others for that matter.

I know from looking after preterm babies, it is heart wrenching watching parents going through so much at the side of their little ones. I always try to find little things that Mum or Dad can do that hopefully will make them feel they are least doing a little something for their precious mite. This must get so much harder as they get older to watch them going through pain that you can’t help them with other than just being there.

All of your children have such wonderful smiles in their pics and all are such good looking kids, I’m glad to see that he has found his smile again, he looked so forlorn in the pic on the ER trolley.

Is this something he is likely to experience again or is it a one off episode.

Take Care all of you and please kep those wonderful smiles.

Lots of Love Carolynn xxxx :-)

  22. Janet says:

  23. Dawn says:

So glad to hear he’s feeling better. There’s nothing worse than a sick kid.

I used to know my youngest was feeling better when she got annoying again. When she was sick, she was the sweetest child in the world, but well? Her mission was to drive us all crazy.

  24. Trudie says:

“And you wonder if you should give them the tylenol to make them feel well enough to whine at you or hold off so they will lay silently on the couch for a little while longer.”

Hi, Glad to hear you are ‘normal’ and your son is feeling much better.

Also, for some reason your Post Treading Water kept staying as the first post. Everytime I would log back in and click on your blog it would not refresh. So for about a week I was thinking you were ill or in hospital. Yes, drama queen am I.
Last night I noticed you posted on Handipoints, which my kids LOVE, and so thought you must be ok and that something was amiss with this blog.
I clicked as usual and it did the same thing, so I clicked on the archives on the left for June and all the posts came up! Sorry for woffling on, I wanted you to know in case you read my comment from Treading Water, and thought “What is she on about, I’ve been posting?” lol
Glad that’s all cleared up, and everyone is well! Enjoy your wekend,
    Cheers

  55. elizabeth says:

So wonderful to see his smile and back a-just-a-swangin’ (yea, showing my age and that I once listened to country)

LOL - I gotta share that I had some extra time and thought I would read your reviews, as I thought there would be reviews ABOUT you and your writing. Well, I’m not disappointed (okay, I am a bit) but have felt nudged to finally break out and USE my caulk single that I too got in the mail. Hmmm - what to start with?
