It’s Like Giving Birth
August 30, 2008
only more drawn out. And more painful.
This is what I have been working on non-stop the past week. I finished painting the walls. Installed the tile. Grouted the tile. Ordered my husband around.
It has been an exhausting week.
There is still quite a bit that needs to be done (counters! plumbing that works! cabinet doors!), but we are in the homestretch now.

GORGEOUS!!! We built our own home, so I know the stress it can be at times. I am not ready to say it was all worth it, but it does feel nice as things get completed! Pat yourself on the back for me, ok?
August 30th, 2008 at 9:12 amI have serious stove envy.
Looks great! Can’t wait to see it complete.
August 30th, 2008 at 9:16 amCongratulations! A bouncing, baby kitchen!
August 30th, 2008 at 9:18 amJust beautiful.
Wow. Anything short of divorce would have been worth THAT beautiful, beautiful room. I may just move into it. Don’t worry, the kids won’t bother me. They can climb over me. I grew up in large family, I’ll be fine. But don’t you think you want to move the window a little to the right? KIDDING!!!
August 30th, 2008 at 9:31 amIt’s beautiful! What fun you’ll have admiring it when it’s all done.

Oh my word, is this beautiful or what? And, I am hoping — worth the wait? I do have one question — what is the first meal you are planning to prepare in this wonderful space–something special I hope.
August 30th, 2008 at 10:37 amIt is gorgeous! I am so amazed with how much you are able to do on your own. We are not handy around here at all! I hope that the rest gets finished without any problems for you.

August 30th, 2008 at 2:09 pmChris it’s just lovely. And yes! Apron sink! I covet it cheerfully.
August 30th, 2008 at 2:32 pmIt’s far enough along to get a good sense of the end, very lovely. Don’t I remember you cooking with a tiny oven that your pans didn’t fit in? Did you get an interim solution or have you been doing that all along?
August 30th, 2008 at 2:36 pmOh, my. That stove just made me drool on my keyboard. Excuse me.
August 30th, 2008 at 2:46 pmI am DROOLING.

August 30th, 2008 at 3:22 pmAll I saw was that beautiful stove and lovely floor and didn’t notice the missing countertops and cabinets. Man, you should hire yourself out. I can’t believe you did all that. Enjoy, it is a beautiful kitchen.
August 30th, 2008 at 3:26 pmWhat you’ve got so far is gorgeous! And I think someone ought to prepare YOU a special first meal in that kitchen. Maybe someone should inform your children that their mom deserves a special dinner? Then again, you might not want grubby little hands touching your beautiful kitchen!
August 30th, 2008 at 5:00 pmLooks great! Did your Halloween room get finished; how’d it turn out?
August 30th, 2008 at 5:56 pmGooood job, that’s a lot of hard work but it’s looking fantastic.
August 30th, 2008 at 6:36 pmI just drooled on my computer. I should probably go get something to wipe it off, but I can’t tear myself away from that gorgeous kitchen!! Congratulations!
August 30th, 2008 at 7:11 pmWOW. I am really, really envious of your skills! I’d love new flooring and countertops, and just couldn’t possibly make them look even half as beautiful as yours! Congrats, Chris!

i will be following in your footsteps i hope one day… renovating a big, old house
August 30th, 2008 at 7:56 pmMay I compliment your grout lines? I know first hand how painfully difficult tile installation can be. It is SO worth it. Your kitchen looks amazing already. The final product will be stunning. You’re on the home stretch now!
August 30th, 2008 at 8:06 pmIt’s gorgeous Chris! I am incredibly jealous.
August 30th, 2008 at 8:29 pmBeautiful!

August 30th, 2008 at 11:21 pmI do believe that is the most beautiful stove I have ever seen.
August 30th, 2008 at 11:23 pmIt is beautiful. A labor of love.
August 31st, 2008 at 12:28 amI was so mesmerized by the stove and tile floor that I didn’t even notice the top cabinets were without doors - definitely did a double take. Looks wonderful!!!
August 31st, 2008 at 2:27 amWe just finished 13 weeks without a kitchen. And I have the exact same Viking oven. I love, love, love mine. Have you used yours yet??? It’s noisy, that would be the only downfall. I’ve already used the griddle and grill to the point it looks “seasoned.” Let me know how you like it!
August 31st, 2008 at 3:43 amIt’s beautiful! We’re redoing our floors right now (and just did our backsplash.) I know it’s so much work! It turned out gorgeous!
August 31st, 2008 at 7:39 amLooks beautiful! The stove is fabulous!
August 31st, 2008 at 9:11 amAbsolutely gorgeous!!!
August 31st, 2008 at 9:20 amYou know how to install and grout tile… and parent seven kids…. and write and… well everything else…
August 31st, 2008 at 10:37 amYou are a superhero. And I know a thing or two about superheros… I have sons
What a totally amazing kitchen, can’t wait to see the counter tops and cupboard doors.
It is soooo nice and roomy, makes my kitchen look like a small coset.
But it does look out through a large window onto a large patio/entertainment area that has the BBQ and the wood fired oven, does that count as a kitchen extention ????
Take Care and enjoy it, I look forward to the new recipes that will come of it .
Lots of Love Carolynn
August 31st, 2008 at 11:32 amCan’t wait to see a picture of the whole family sitting around the table with a big bowl of soup prepared on that fantabulous stove. Definitely a kitchen worth waiting for and working on.
August 31st, 2008 at 12:27 pmAnd like birth…it’s always worth it in the end!
August 31st, 2008 at 4:03 pmOh my gawd, that stove is amazing.
August 31st, 2008 at 4:32 pmAnd I love the floors!
Ordering my husband around always makes me tired, too.
It looks beautiful, though. I love your oven and range!
August 31st, 2008 at 5:02 pmOhhhhhhhhhhhhh…Pretty!
I am so jealous
August 31st, 2008 at 6:30 pmWow! Fabuloso! That makes my upcoming (tiny) mudroom-laundry-room tile project seem rather pathetic. That really rocks–hope you’re celebrating by NOT cooking!
August 31st, 2008 at 7:20 pmThat is a really nice looking stove. We’re house shopping and man am I envious.
August 31st, 2008 at 8:38 pmAre you sure that’s enough cabinet space? Do you have more hidden in the corner out of site?
It is real purty!
August 31st, 2008 at 11:13 pmHa! I am such a dork! I didn’t notice the counters, or the cabinet doors, or anything else that needs to be done. I looked at it and thought, “Damn, SHE’S already got nice light fixtures and a range hood! Damn.” Because I still don’t. But I do have counters. You’ll feel SO spoiled when you have flat, sturdy surfaces to put things on in there again. Oh, so decadent!
Did you buy the range hood, or did y’all have it made?

September 1st, 2008 at 1:41 amFabulous! I’m so impressed that you can do this ‘handy’ self-repair stuff. I practically faint if I attempt to paint, but I’m spoiled like that.
It is beautiful.
September 1st, 2008 at 2:01 amGorgeous! What’d you name it?!
September 1st, 2008 at 3:20 amI love your new kitchen it is beautiful.

September 4th, 2008 at 1:55 pmLike you really need another comment saying the same thing as everyone else… but I just have to say it - Wow! It looks great!
I’ve not stopped by in a while so it’s great to catch up! And the kitchen? Dude I remember some of the photos of it from err last year (?) last winter at least. From a mess to beautiful. But dang - I’m jealous. You seem to make PERFECT decisions! The appliances, the paint color, the tile… I always second guess myself (and third and fourth) and end up eclectic.
How do you make such great decisions? Talent, advice or information gathering??????
September 9th, 2008 at 8:28 pmYour kitchen looks beautiful! You must be so happy with it! We bought the home we’re in now almost 2 years ago. We gutted the 70’s style kitchen immediately and cooked out of a microwave that sat in our foyer for almost 3 weeks while our dream kitchen was being installed. I have no regrets now and neither will you. It was worth eating all of those hotdogs!
