Cue hysterical laughter
October 26, 2008
and my exasperated husband who is away.
“So, can we just push the tree off and drive the van to the shop?”
“Ah hahahahahahahahaha.”
“Was it a big tree?”
“Ah hahahahahahahahaha. Hahahahaha”
“Can’t you get out the chainsaw and cut it up?”
“Hahahahahaha Hahahahahaha.”
“What?”
“Do you mean the tree or the van?”

Holy big tree batman. I am sure your husband will forgive your laughter after he views the pictures.
October 26th, 2008 at 9:33 amThank God there was no one inside the van!! that is a huge tree!!
October 26th, 2008 at 9:38 amAs a child, when a hurricane was expected to come through my dad would park is work van under the big pine tree just hoping for a little karma and maybe a little insurance money - I’m guessing this is what it would have looked like if it ever happened!
October 26th, 2008 at 9:52 amwow.
October 26th, 2008 at 10:07 amOh. Muhgod. That’s some tree!! Your posts about it are so funny! I’m glad you find the humor in it…somewhere, it really is bad bad bad. Good excuse for a new van!
October 26th, 2008 at 10:12 amOH MY GOSH!!! Whew! Maybe I WOULD be kicking the tires and screaming by now. It looks worse in the daylight! Was there wind? A big storm? That’s a mighty big tree! Hope you do not have those size trees by your house especially the new kitchen.
October 26th, 2008 at 10:14 amLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 26th, 2008 at 10:34 amI don’t know what to say. Maybe sell the tree for firewood to cover the deductible? Charge admission?
That really sucks.
October 26th, 2008 at 10:36 amAhhh-haaahaaaahaaaahaaaa!
October 26th, 2008 at 10:39 amum, no. that’s not exactly safe to drive, is it. Just… Yikes.
October 26th, 2008 at 10:40 amWow! I think laughing is the only way to go. But now you get to go “shopping”… VAN shopping…
October 26th, 2008 at 10:46 amYou poor woman. Does insurance cover this or does it fall under force majeur?
October 26th, 2008 at 10:53 amEven MY husband laughed a bit uncomfortably, if that helps.
Egads. I guess this is what insurance is for. God help the rep who dare give you a hard time over the claim. Yikes. So sorry.
October 26th, 2008 at 10:55 amI know this is probably wrong to say but seeing as how nobody was in the van so nobody got hurt: that looks so freakin’ awesome!
October 26th, 2008 at 11:05 amNo child or adult was in the van at the time? Thank all the gods and spirits in the universe. Anything else is no big deal.
October 26th, 2008 at 11:31 amWow. Just be glad you weren’t in it at the time.
October 26th, 2008 at 11:45 amOh. My. Still no words.
October 26th, 2008 at 12:23 pmAn older friend of ours had a tree fall on his beater pickup truck, but it fell lengthwise along the passenger side of the truck. The truck (somehow) is still driveable, and the bed wasn’t too badly damaged, but it isn’t really worth the money to fix — so he still drives it around the ranch with the passenger side of the cab crushed in. (It took the shape of the tree trunk, of course, so it’s dented in a large “U.”)
Don’t think that will work for you, though.
October 26th, 2008 at 1:15 pmOh wow! I suppose you should leave it that way until the insurance folks have seen it. I’d be having a hard time controlling the hysterical laughter too
October 26th, 2008 at 1:34 pmOh NO! Here’s hoping that your insurance company will take good care of you.
October 26th, 2008 at 1:34 pmTell him to look on the bright side, at least it didn’t fall on the house. No extra remodeling!
October 26th, 2008 at 1:39 pmI really am sorry about the van though. That’s got to stink.
October 26th, 2008 at 1:41 pmWow… just wow.
October 26th, 2008 at 2:07 pmWhy, oh why, did that tree have to fall at just that angle to hit your van? Why? Or why did the van have to be parked right there, right then, when the darned tree fell?
So many questions. So few answers.
And somehow it is so completely a direct hit, that it is funny. It’s a funny van & tree visual joke for sure.
October 26th, 2008 at 2:10 pmI TOTALLED my car in a highway accident last winter, and my son and I walked away without a scratch on us. I still can’t bear to think about what I would have done if he had been hurt in any way…. SO yeah, van being destroyed sucks. And is IS kinda funny (because what else are you supposed to do, get upset? Van will still be totalled.)And nobody got hurt, which is the only thing that matters.
October 26th, 2008 at 2:41 pmThe sound must have been awesome! All I can say is thank goodness it was your car and not your house. Can you imagine that nightmare? We have lots of tall white pines around our house and it’s my biggest fear. They sway and whistle when it’s windy.
October 26th, 2008 at 3:28 pmIs it a hardwood suitable for the fireplace?
October 26th, 2008 at 3:56 pmI love how you make a picture of destruction look so beautiful and artistic.
October 26th, 2008 at 3:58 pmThose are some amazing pictures.
October 26th, 2008 at 4:03 pmI don’t know… maybe he has a point. I mean, I plan on having lots of kids so they can do stuff around the house, so with all 8 of you together, don’t you think you could just pop that tree off and maybe push it to the mechanic? ; )
Seriously, wait until he sees it. He’ll die.
October 26th, 2008 at 4:11 pmWow. That is something I cringe about when we get big storms - so sorry it happened to you, but very glad no one was hurt.
October 26th, 2008 at 4:23 pmThat also happened to our car in a windstorm, along time ago. We didn’t have to pay the deductible cause it fell under “comprehensive insurance”, an Act of God. Hope you get lucky too.
October 26th, 2008 at 5:00 pmI understand. It’s the feeling of having to laugh or you’d have to cry. Laughing is so much better!
October 26th, 2008 at 5:20 pmI had a tree fall on my car once during an ice storm…I was driving it at the time, because only idiots drive to the grocery store during an ice storm. Glad no one got hurt…at least it makes a good story!
October 26th, 2008 at 5:24 pmOh dear.
October 26th, 2008 at 5:32 pmThat has got to be the biggest fallen tree I’ve ever seen, what amazing grace that not a sole was in its path when it fell. I’m hoping for you that it’s the truck you tell us was in need of being replaced and not the new truck.
Really amazing photos.
October 26th, 2008 at 5:35 pmHoly baloney. That’s awful! But the leaves are really a lovely hue there in the NE . . . right. There really is no bright side here. Sorry, hon.
October 26th, 2008 at 5:39 pmWhich do you think will end up covering it? Homeowner’s or Auto ???
I keep thinking of the way your son broke the news to you. That is one of the funniest thing I have heard in ages!
Chris says: According to the insurance company, Auto.
October 26th, 2008 at 6:01 pmUmm yes, that completely sucks, and yes it is completely hysterical.
October 26th, 2008 at 6:47 pmWow! Bet you’ll be laughing for a good loooooong while over that one!
October 26th, 2008 at 7:06 pmO…M…G…That is some seriously crazy stuff. Wow. I’m with you on the hysterical laughing, though. Sometimes it’s the only way!
October 26th, 2008 at 8:01 pmOh man! I think we’re in the same state according to sponge bob cup in the Santa clause pics a couple years ago. That wind was awful last night. And I’m sure it’s really nothing compared to hurricanes! But I was so waiting for these trees surrounding my house to come crashing onto us last night.. It was just blowing so loud it was crazy! Im sorry your van looks the way it does now.
Do you have another vehicle that carries all of you together? Good luck, hope things go quickly for another vehicle for you and that you have no problems getting it covered!
October 26th, 2008 at 8:59 pmMy 4 year old looked at one of the pictures and said, “Oh! Mama! That poor tree!”….SO not what I was expecting!
October 26th, 2008 at 9:15 pmHahahahaha. Hahaha. Haha. Huh. Mmmmmm……
October 26th, 2008 at 9:19 pmOh my. I am so sorry.
Your laughter is contagious BTW.
October 26th, 2008 at 9:30 pmI think you should leave it that way until after Halloween…it would be great all decked out in creepy decorations!
Glad no one was hurt!
October 26th, 2008 at 9:34 pmI read your entry to my husband and then showed him the pictures. He was laughing as much as you were. Maybe, just maybe, now he understands why I love my blog community.
October 26th, 2008 at 10:10 pmSpectacular! Thank goodness nobody was hurt. Fabulous tree (I know that’s probably not what you are thinking about it), see if you can get a wood salvager to cut it into useable planks(?) and have someone build you a table or a toy van out of it.
October 26th, 2008 at 10:56 pmPS to my other post…Need to get rid of that wood?
Or do you burn your own. I can’t remember from previous pictures.
October 26th, 2008 at 11:10 pmOh poor Chris!! But, you did take amazing pictures of it!
October 27th, 2008 at 1:19 amgeeeeez you poor thing!!
it’s good you can laugh about it though
October 27th, 2008 at 5:51 amThe pictures are even more amazing and hysteria-inducing in the light of day. It totally trumps our trampoline being blown into the treeline.
October 27th, 2008 at 7:49 amDamn! Much grimmer in the harsh light of day. You can always sell the wood. : )
October 27th, 2008 at 7:54 amHoly crap.
October 27th, 2008 at 7:56 amOkay, this is supposed to make me, finally - be thankful for living with few/little trees on my property (property in suburbia!). Ah, man - glad no one was hurt, but DA~UM!

October 27th, 2008 at 9:07 amYou take the best pictures
October 27th, 2008 at 10:00 amI can’t stop giggling imagining the conversation if you’d had to make your claim over the phone to one of the “outsourced” call centres….
October 27th, 2008 at 12:16 pmThat could have taken days….
Hope you’ve got a replacement soon!
Wow.. the first set of pictures didn’t come close to capturing the level of damage that tree actually did. This set.. wow. Just Wow. Literally jawdropping. I am glad no one was inside.
And I agree.. all you can really do is laugh
October 27th, 2008 at 12:47 pmWOW! I had the joy of driving across your fair state in that weather. Glad you are all safe.
October 27th, 2008 at 5:10 pmOh No! That looks like a hoax on The Tonight Show or something….seriously???
October 27th, 2008 at 9:04 pmwowsers…hope you did not leaving anything in the van that you liked.
October 27th, 2008 at 9:28 pmOh. My. Word.
October 28th, 2008 at 10:27 amThat is an amazingly huge tree.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:44 pmThe same thing happened to us less than two months after we bought our car. It was the first brand new car both my husband and I had ever owned.
October 29th, 2008 at 12:22 am
