The Definition of No Time
November 21, 2008
My life has been consumed by the following things, in no particular order:
1) Fundraising for football. To include running the pie sale with another woman who is just as clueless about how these are run as I am. I do like her. And we laugh a lot. But still, time consuming.
2) Ordering boxes in which to put the pies for the aforementioned pie sale fundraiser. I had forgotten that I ordered the boxes and yesterday afternoon the UPS man delivered them and I actually looked at the box and said out loud, “What the hell is this?” Then I opened the box and realized I have 100 boxes to assemble.
3) Buying my oldest son “special” food. And by “special” I mean completely lacking in calories. He is never going to want to eat watermelon or grapes ever again. Which is fine with me, because do you have any idea how much those things cost out of season? I could get him a steak for less money.
4) Driving hither and yon to football practice. Last night it was at the YMCA which smells like old sweat and chlorine and has a humidity level of 90%.
5) Standing outside of various businesses begging patrons for money. This is to fund the team’s trip to the National Championship in FL not for my own personal gain.
6) Finally getting the insurance company to tow away the poor smashed van. I was so tired of looking at it sitting there in the driveway.
7) Cleaning my house, a never ending exercise in futility. Same with the laundry.
Clearing out all the junk food in the house that tempts my oldest son. Doing this in spite of the protests of the other children who cry, “But we aren’t dieting!”
9) Listening to the same oldest son bitch and moan about his restricted diet. And trust me I would be bitching too. The good news only 16 days until weigh in. And only 4-5 pounds left to go. As soon as weigh in is over the coach is taking him and the other boys to the all you can eat carb buffet. The dieting boys all talk about this like it is a pilgrimage to Mecca where they will be presented with 100 virgins instead of Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, and apple pie.
10) Flying back and forth to Chicago. On the plus side, my kids have become adept at packing their own suitcases. Yes, even my 3 yr old packs for himself. My last trip will be on Thanksgiving Day.
11) And as of this weekend, I will be baking pies. And assembling boxes.
Thus concludes what is possibly the most boring post I have ever written.

The kids are going on these Chicago trips, too??? I thought you were getting out without them! If they can pack their own suitcases they should be able to stay home and fend for themselves, right?
November 21st, 2008 at 11:45 amWell, I wouldn’t call it boring exactly. Dizzying, certainly. And I did find it bemusing, that #8 turned into a smilie wearing shades.
I do hope it all settles down soon, that your son makes weight, that enough money is raised, that the flights continue to go well, and that all of the pies are fabulous.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:49 amdo these pies ship to california? b/c ill buy one. actually forget about the pie, just tell me where to send the $.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:55 amI just realized that your oldest son’s diet will be still be on during Thanksgiving.
I admire his determination and ability to stick to it, and I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that 1) enough money is raised and 2) he makes the weigh-in.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:07 pmYeah….and I thought I was busy.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:08 pmHang in there. All of you!
November 21st, 2008 at 12:26 pmYou are a fabulous mother. Should your children ever say otherwise, show them this post as evidence.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:35 pmWhew–I am tired from reading all that you do. To quote my mother “this too shall pass”. And it will and you will, some day, marvel at all you could accomplish in such a short period of time. To your son–hang in there–carbs are just a few days away. I never did get the PayPal info to make a donation–would still be interested in that. Good luck to you and your son–and, do keep us posted.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:36 pmUgh….that makes me tired just reading all that. You must really kinda like that boy to do so much for him. ;o) Good Luck!
November 21st, 2008 at 12:56 pmJust remind him of the last last weigh in and maybe wait until the game is over for the big bash. Never know when the other team might challenge the bigger boys.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:47 pm…but still beats doing any of the aforementioned things, I’m sure!
Hey, if I were there, I would totally call dibs on the boxes. Lord knows I’d ruin more pies than I got right.
LUCK!
November 21st, 2008 at 1:52 pmThat stinks that he has to go through Thanksgiving without eating the good stuff. You are a really good mom. They would have lost me at assembling 100 pie boxes. (Trying to think of a question to ask you on the turkey chat, but I know so little about cooking turkeys, I can’t even think of a question.)
November 21st, 2008 at 2:02 pmI don’t know if completely boring is totally accurate - the virgins added some excitement for sure!!
November 21st, 2008 at 2:08 pmBest of luck with all the travel, pies and dieting.
Our wrestlers like to cut weight by running while wearing trash bags under layers and layers of sweats. Seems to work for them.
November 21st, 2008 at 2:15 pmI didn’t think it was boring at all. In fact, it’s infinitely more interesting than my life.
November 21st, 2008 at 3:05 pmThis is my first visit, and my mouth dropped open….I am living your life as well. I am making a sweeping assumption that you are talking about the Pop Warner Superbowl? Yes? My two midget age sons are one game away from going as well, and I living your life, EXCEPT that we finally don’t have to worry about weight with the addition of the extra pound a week. Other non football moms just don’t understand the weight issue. They look at me like I am crazy. Completely understandable. I remember my first year with Pop Warner and I remember thinking, “there is no way I would do that to my kid.” LOL..yep, living it!
November 21st, 2008 at 3:28 pmYour posts are never boring!
November 21st, 2008 at 3:42 pmJust a little dieting tip - Watermelon is NOT a diet food. You have to stick to Northern fruits and vegetables.
Chris says: really? but it is all water, isn’t it?
November 21st, 2008 at 3:52 pmYou even make boring look like fun!
November 21st, 2008 at 4:11 pmOh my goodness…Thanksgiving with a watermelon and grape diet? That’s plain torture!
November 21st, 2008 at 4:19 pmOh my, your son is dedicated, I could never diet with Thanksgiving on the horizon!
November 21st, 2008 at 4:32 pmJust curious, do they weigh the boys before you travel to Florida or in Florida before they play? And if your son is over weight, does he get to go to Florida and not play, or does he not get to go at all and all your fundraising has been for naught? While the other kids miss out on trip they didn’t know about to begin with? On the side, I sympathize with him as I too am dieting this Thanksgiving. No pie for me
Chris says: The boys need to have their official weigh-in down there. I am fairly confident that my son will make the weight at weigh-in. It is just the first day they need to be weighed and certified AND they can weigh-in with shorts, a tshirt, and flip flops… unlike the season when they had to weigh-in with their pads on. Once they are certified they are free to gain as much weight as they want during the week.
I am working on Thanksgiving so we aren’t even going to celebrate it this year until after Florida. Eating all that food in front of him would be cruel.
November 21st, 2008 at 5:38 pm…”a pilgrimage to Mecca where they will be presented with 100 virgins…” - so freaking funny!
November 21st, 2008 at 5:51 pm3 calories per grape; 86 calories for 1 wedge of watermelon (286g or 1/16th of a whole melon).
fwiw.
November 21st, 2008 at 5:51 pmTo clarify about the watermelon, yes, it is mostly water. In fact, it’s a diuretic, so it should help with some of the water weight as well. What Dot might be referring to is it’s fairly high carbs (11g/1 cup) which translates to sugars, which isn’t that great for general dieters.
November 21st, 2008 at 8:11 pmI don’t know if this will help, but Weight Watchers has several 0 point soup recipes and they now have a Progresso soup that is also 0 points.

November 21st, 2008 at 8:38 pmWhat is the paypal info so I can donate some money for your son’s team. I remember when my soccer team was invited to play in a tournament in Europe. I was only 16… and we had to wash a ton of cars. I mean a TON. Now, had someone mentioned that had we washed these cars closer to the street that we would have, um, enticed more paying customers. Something about 16-year-old Catholic school girls washing cars seems to be inspirational!
November 21st, 2008 at 9:04 pmBoring? No. Your life is certainly not boring now, either. Hang on tight, it’s a bumpy ride, motherhood is!
November 21st, 2008 at 10:27 pmAre there 100 virgins left? Are they extinct or just endangered? I think I would be thankful my son is still more interested in food!
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:16 amboring or not, it was good to hear from you…
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:42 amNot so much boring as another day in the life of a mom. I don’t work and my days and weeks sound fairly similar. I’ll trade you your schedule if you come make Thanksgiving dinner for my in laws in my Smurf house.
November 22nd, 2008 at 6:15 amMore power to you with the fundraising. We are off the hook for Girl Scout cookies this year as neither daughter joined. Now both girls play on travel volleyball teams, so may be later in the year we’ll need to do the fundraising thing.
November 22nd, 2008 at 4:27 pmI browsed your old posts but didn’t find my answer.
Is it the Pop Warner Superbowl? For what age group…that would be a wild coincidence. They just gathered us together to talk about fund raising. If we win, I think we might be a tad to late with only a week before we’d have to leave….you guys are working ahead.
Chris says: Um, I don’t know. We have been calling it that National Championship. It is in FL the week of Dec 7th. Is that what you are talking about?
November 22nd, 2008 at 11:25 pmPlease be careful about any 0 point weight watcher food because if eaten in enough quantity, they do add up (it is a confusing discussion so I won’t go into it) and any soup NOT homemade is going to be high in sodium which will contribute to water weight. Wishing you and your family all the best!
November 23rd, 2008 at 1:08 amFar from being the most boring post. I totally LOL’ed at #9. Oh your poor son. I’m on a diet myself and I’d gladly trade in 100 virgin (boys) for a dinner of steak and mashed potatoes.. I think my eyes glazed over at the very thought.. must resist…
November 24th, 2008 at 2:28 amBoring? You must be kidding! If I were in your shoes, I would have surrendered all and put myself to bed. I still can’t wrap my head around that whole weight thing.
