The Ones That Don’t Make the Cut
January 6, 2009
Chosing only one photo per day is difficult. There are so many others that sum up my life. Like this one.
I know it shouldn’t make me laugh, but this is how his bipolar self frequently looks. I can’t remember what it was that upset him so.
Or this photo. This child has a huge personality, something I think often gets lost in still photos. I was taking photos of her with her window art and suddenly she said, “Jazz hands!” And THAT was funny. Right? It isn’t just me, is it? Looking at the photo still makes me laugh.
Or this one because Miles always rubs his chin and says, “Hmmmmmmmmm,” like a little old man. And I want to remember that.
Today the photo that didn’t make the cut is this one. The sky looks like this every night right before dinner in the winter. This is the color of bitter cold.
I love this photo because you can see that she is singing with all her heart. And playing the guitar with enthusiasm. So much so that I taught her this song:
Well, if you want to sing out, sing out
And if you want to be free, be free
cause theres a million things to be
You know that there are
-Cat Stevens
Ah, a throw back to my Deadhead days. Okay, I never really was a Deadhead. I enjoyed showering too much for that. And shaving my armpits. But I was envious of all my friends who tossed off the shackles of life and followed the Dead around the country. Until they all ended up in rehab, that is.

I have a hard time choosing my photo of the day as well!
January 6th, 2009 at 7:27 pmGREAT photos!! I love the jazz hands one the best.
January 6th, 2009 at 7:31 pmThat last picture is awesome!
January 6th, 2009 at 7:32 pmI have been having the same problems with picking only one picture. Each one of the kids does something that I want to remember everyday.
The sky is beautiful in the background. Cold has never looked so colorful!
January 6th, 2009 at 8:15 pmI have a friend who sold tie-dyes at Grateful Dead concerts. Today, she is a suburban mom of four.
I was just listening to Cat today - Oh, baby, baby, it’s a wild world….that song has a special poignancy for moms with teens champing at the bit to leave home. I never realized it before.
Chris says: Oh I just heard that song on the radio the other day!
January 6th, 2009 at 8:20 pmI still don’t know how you haven’t just fallen into those dimples and flat *drowned* in the cuteness that must be pooled in them.
January 6th, 2009 at 9:51 pmIt’s funny who I remember that ended up in rehab–or who didn’t make it at all. Sad, but I tell you some of them were onto something with their ability to just go where they wanted. I hope someday I can take a picture of my kids doing something absolutely wild, while absolutely sober.
January 6th, 2009 at 10:00 pmYou make me want to have a family. (Children, I mean. I already am part of a family. You probably knew what I meant, right?)
You just seem to have so much fun with your kids. I love it.
January 6th, 2009 at 10:06 pmRe: your daughter’s photo — yes, that is hysterical. I will now think of that picture whenever I hear “jazz hands!”
January 6th, 2009 at 10:07 pmYou probably don’t care but….I left you a little something over at my blog…check it out.
January 6th, 2009 at 10:08 pmOK these photos are priceless - particularly Miles with his hand on his chin. I must say I am quite envious of these photos. I am not having as much luck with a pic a day but I hope to have something worth sharing with distant relatives by the end of the year. Keep ‘em coming, Chris, keep ‘em coming. And again, thanks for sharing.
January 6th, 2009 at 10:11 pmI love that last picture too. And the Cat Stevens.
I tried for an entire summer once to not shave my armpits but I really didn’t like it much.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:29 pmOh dude. These are the awesomest photos ever!
January 6th, 2009 at 11:37 pmThe best part of the “cat stevens” photo is the tiara.
January 7th, 2009 at 8:46 amI love the first one. The fact that his sister is so unconcerning with his crying…… priceless!
January 7th, 2009 at 10:11 amLove Cat Stevens! Not a big fan of the Dead, but yet I went and married myself a Deadhead. Go figure. He’s a Senior Chief in the Navy now too.
LOVE the photos!!
January 7th, 2009 at 10:31 amTobi beat me to it — the jazz hands are funny, yes, VERY! — but I love that she just sits around the house, guitar in hand, with a tiara on. I want to be reading your blog in about 10 years when then boys start a-callin’…..
January 7th, 2009 at 12:11 pmI also love the first one of Miles…definitely priceless. My youngest of three girls, who is 8 and 10 years younger than her sisters, respectively, does that “woe is me” screaming thing. It’s so very, very sad, isn’t it?
Awesome picture.
January 7th, 2009 at 12:30 pmI just figured the “picture a day” was a suggestion… I’ve had several occasions where I’ve had to post at least two pictures already, LOL. They’re all great pix!
January 7th, 2009 at 1:11 pmGreat photos what kind of camera do you have?
Chris says: Nikon D40X
January 7th, 2009 at 1:56 pmDARLING kids once again. I actually adore the last picture-great colors! Awesome guitar, too. We bought our 8-year-old a cheapie for CHristmas and he has already busted a string. Now what do I do? Is that a real guitar and is she really learning? If so, AWESOME!!
January 7th, 2009 at 3:24 pmThat guitar picture is perfect! So is the jazz hands, and the little old man. I can see how hard it would be for you to choose just one picture a day! Now, for me, with my crappy camera, and lack of skillz, it might be a tad easier. ..
January 8th, 2009 at 8:02 amAbout a year ago my husband jokingly referred to my hippie days in front of our daughter. She was aghast that he would insult me so and she firmly scolded him for calling me a hippie. When I confirmed that I was indeed once a hippie, she looked at me like I had lost my mind and started to cry, “NO! Mom, you couldn’t have been a hippie!”
I don’t think I ever laughed so hard. And then I told her I used to go to Dead concerts, too. Through her tears of fear that her Mother would soon stop washing and begin sleeping in concert parking lots, she sniffled “The Who?”
Having a 13 year old boy around the house, I sympathize with the “ATTITUDE”. It sort of emanates from their pores, doesn’t it?
