This is the BEST thing that I have cooked in a long, long time. You should make it. Right now. No seriously, RIGHT NOW.

And then invite me over.

*****

You want to know something funny? I wrote my last post thinking that it was about how I am choosing to be happy, but for many of you it didn’t read that way.

I honestly am not depressed. I do not need medication. I was in that place after Miles born, a place I never want to revisit, and I can say that I am nowhere near there. Could I benefit from a little sunlight? Sure! A little less stress? Sure! A beach with a tasty mixed drink served by a hot cabana boy? Well, who couldn’t? I am human after all.

But you know what? Chinese food is a close second.

People seem to freak out when moms blog about the darker side of being moms–even just the gray side. I feel you–Janufeb is a slodge and you gotta grab onto those little things that give you a bit o sunshine.

You didn’t sound depressed, you sounded like me when I lived in upstate NY for the first 35 years of my life. Then, one day about four years ago, my husband got sick of my annual mid-winter,mid-life crisis, and decided I needed sunshine forever. We ended up in Florida and I haven’t had a crappy day since. Okay, that’s a total lie, but the sunshine helps tremendously and I hope you enjoy your time at your friends beach house.

  3. Lilly says:

Thanks! I was looking for something new to feed my gang. I’ll make this tomorrow night!

  4. Deputy's Wife says:

I know what you mean. It’s not depression, it’s just WINTER! We are trapped!!! I bought a day pass to the local Y for this Saturday. We are all going swimming. And at least pretend it is summer for a few hours.

  5. ramblin' red says:

I didn’t think you were clinically depressed, m’dear. Just suffering from a case of the winter blahs. And I can relate. And Chinese food does take away from the blahs, at least in my book!

  6. t in hd says:

Honestly, how can *anyone* be truly happy in winter?? As long as you’re not suicidal, you’re probably doing pretty well. At least, that’s my yard stick.

I picked up a children’s book yesterday with beautiful pictures of summer. I could have cried.

  7. Laura says:

I love chinese food, especially beansprouts. HUsband makes a mean chicken fried rice. Mmmmmmm. I need chinese for tea now!

  8. Brigitte says:

Gee, I hadn’t read it like that. More like you were just taking it “one day at a time” and all. Though I’ll still take the beach/drink/boy thing. And throw in some of that fried rice too!

  9. Jennifer says:

I went back and reread yesterday’s post. A closer reading did, indeed, reveal that you were definitely looking at things in a positive light. It was the title that threw me off (even though you pointed out that treading water was better than drowing!).

Did someone really suggest you get on medication?

  10. ks grandma says:

When I read it, I wondered if you are still drinking coffee. I am learning, at an advanced age, kicking and fussing the whole way, the new gluten free lifestyle. And just last week, I read that I should not be drinking coffee. Huh? So, does gluten just sneak around at night imposing itself into all things good and pleasurable? Or was it a case of hey! while we’re writing this really restrictive diet, let’s get them to quit coffee too. I’ll get back to you on results, I’m still in the massive headache, caffeine withdrawal stage. Treading water indeed.

Chris says: I have never heard anything about gluten being in coffee!

  11. Cary says:

I think a great deal of us are feeling down right now (winter, the economy, etc.), and probably just projecting it onto you. Chinese food ALWAYS helps!

  12. jody says:

    That looks insanely delicious.

Beaches, frozen beverages and some warm sun will do the trick every time.

  13. Katie in MA says:

Hooray! All of our well-wishes worked! Or, you were never down to begin with. Either way. Still, it’s nice to know you have a cheering section for when you DO need it. :)

  14. Monique says:

My kind of delicious delicious meal also!

  15. chris says:

your words from yesterday made perfect sense in my head. the snow still looks nice, but it’s way too cold for anyone to go out and play. it’s tax season at our house, so i am a single parent until april 15. my milepost will be when pitchers and catchers report to spring training in about three weeks. hang in there, it’s not like we have a choice, eh?

  16. Keyona says:

I know you aren’t depressed! I despise the winter as well, especially when days go by without the sun showing it’s face.

Now that dish looks so good I think I may make it TONIGHT!

  17. Alise says:

    AGREED!!

  18. Kelli says:

You gotta find a little happiness where you can. Life isn’t all sunshine and peaches, so whatever gets you through the day, do it!

    Great post!

  19. Lisa Lisa says:

AMEN for Chinses food! I have these days too! Who doesn’t? No really, I want to know.

  20. Maddy says:

Lack of sunshine will do it every time and being the mother of lots of children and running a house!!! We all go to that dark place now and then for some wollowing (not sure that’s how you spell that), that’s where you get your energy back to go on.

  21. evie says:

We’re having Chinese food tonight. And then, we are all
going to watch “Get Smart.” Hope you have a good Friday
    night.

  22. Natalie says:

This looks like one of those recipes my husband calls “moreish”–you just keep eating more and more. Totally making this.

  23. Pretty Jane says:

Huh. I didn’t get depressed from that last post AT ALL. I wonder what that says about *me*??

  24. kat says:

great, now i want chinese food.

i didn’t read that post as depression, or in need of medication. odd how people can read the same thing, & get such different things from it.

all that stuck with me was your remedy for the hole in the wall. brilliant by the way.

  25. maggie madison says:

And stupid ground hog saw his stupid shadow.

  26. Ann says:

This was great. I used some shrimp I had in the freezer. Thanks for another excellent recipe.
