  3. Jenni says:

Wait…what? Didn’t you just finish your kitchen remodel…and now you’re leaving it? I’m confused.

  4. Jaybird says:

details?? Moving? But the house is soooo cute! And the kitchen is remodeled and the dining room. And and and……

We’ve lived vicariously here….the lack of information in this post is enough to make a woman nutty!

But best wishes to you either way! If the thieves get too close, just pray they trip over a bike or sled!

  5. Karen (from Our Deer Baby) says:

    Good luck!

    I HATE moving ^^

  12. Lilly says:

    Hmmm, what’s going on there?

  13. Lisa says:

Wow and you only had like two days to enjoy your new kitchen! I remember your blog back when it was big yellow house and you had the weasel thing in your laundry room . . .

  14. Tiffany says:

Uh, where? Didn’t you just get you kitchen all done?

  15. allmycke says:

Just when you got that wonderful kitchen finished!!!

  16. insertcrazyhere says:

Your moving? What! Your just fixing the house how you like it. I’m confused. Thanks alot for the fuzzy feeling in my brain!

  17. Anna says:

I hope you’re moving somewhere warm, with less than 9 months of winter, or at least that your stuff gets taken somewhere warm without you.

  18. Jennifer Brown says:

Then can I have your house?

  19. Lisa says:

I just don’t have time for you to move this week. Tell them to go away. Maybe I’ll wave a hundred bucks at them….

  20. hollygee says:

So you said you are moving across the country… to some warm[er] place?
May your house sell soon and you have a good move.

  21. Becky says:

got sick of the never ending house renovations? Or did you just decide to start it all over again in a new place?

  22. Holly says:

    huh? after all that renovation?

  23. Heather B. says:

  29. Lisa- Domestic Accident says:

Seriously? You just finished your kitchen!

  30. Gretchen says:

Is that a van for another house on your street? I wonder why they blocked your driveway?

  31. Tiff says:

    Uhh…WHAT!?

  32. Chookooloonks says:

Chris, it appears you have stunned your readers into gobsmacked silence.

  33. mainiac says:

Details! Details! The house next to me in Maine is empty. Are you moving there! (please say yes)

  34. Brianna says:

I get it. It’s just funny that the van blocked your driveway. maybe it is a sign to move somewhere warmer?

Thieves are getting trickier and trickier these days.

  35. Kristie says:

OK, while I am beyond baffled by this announcement, I can honestly say that my first thought was, “Please, PLEASE let it be a move to MY neighborhood!!!!!”

  36. Sus says:

    oooh….you’re good.

And that is why love the internet. You can run but you can’t hide;)

  37. Sharon says:

    Are you serious????

  38. Kristi says:

    Huh? Is this appearance deceiving?

  39. Lotusbirther says:

Well, thieves do have clever disguises - that is just what hapened to our neighbours when they moved out - another van pulled up alongside and robbed them, no-one realised at the time :-( Wasn’t such an impressive lorry though, we do things on a smaller scale round here :-)

  40. Finn Reeds says:

Shut Up! Why move that beautiful family from that beautiful home in that beautiful country? Should I be feeling this sad right now????

  41. Ginny says:

Don’t let ‘em take your stuff! Re: Lotusbirther–I wish I had a lorry.

  42. Liesl says:

Wow. When I saw this post and I thought it must be someone else moving . . . and then I see the boxes . . . and . . . I don’t know how you do it. If you are moving, I hope it is a good move and that it is what you want/need, etc.

  43. Karen says:

You know down south, we play baseball all year. Just what a baseball guy would love!

  44. Johna says:

With as much work as you put into it, I hope you made a killing off of the sale! Good luck with your move!

  45. The Bossy Yankee says:

You could have knocked me over with a feather just now. WOW congrats!

  46. Bronnie says:

OMG!! you ARE moving!!! WHY?! I love your house.

  47. Jess says:

Oh wow really? You just did all that work on the world’s best kitchen. Good luck!!

  48. smochame says:

Are you kidding? What about that kitchen?? I’m so confused.

  49. Crisanne says:

Glad to see I’m not the only one that was caught off guard with this one. I kept thinking I was missing something! My how you’ve hidden this well!

  50. Ashley says:

    Huh?

I have been shocked out of my lurker status.

  51. Roseann says:

Man, you all are SKIMMERS. Total skimmers.
The house looks oh so empty. I hope the move goes well.

  52. Cary says:

But what is that wall going to do without your oldest holding it up?

  53. El says:

Good luck with the move! I hope it all goes as smoothly as possible, given the nature of the beast.

  54. Melody says:

Okay so nothing I say about moving after you just redid your kitchen is going to be anything all the other ones haven’t said. But really?? Moving? I’m so sorry. ;) We just moved two weeks ago and I’m still going insane.

  55. Emily in IL says:

Oh, come on! You can’t just leave us hanging like this! We need reasons and details and, well, REASONS damnit!

I hope it’s only for bigger and better things, and no steps back or anything.

    Best wishes.

PS we still need reasons and details darn it.

  56. Johnna says:

I don’t think anyone has asked the important question yet… Who will hold up the wall in that house if you move?

  57. Carolynn from Western Australia says:

Seroiusly, are you really moving???? I have so fallen in love with this house and the winter snow.

    Good Luck
    Take Care
    Lots of Love Carolynn

  58. Deputy's Wife says:

I am with the rest of them… HUH?

  59. Lisa says:

Eh??? I’m intrigued! I thought you were in the middle of remodeling!??? Do tell…….SPILL IT!

  60. J from Ireland says:

    Arter ALL that work!!
Dying to find out the details.
    Good luck with it.

  61. carrien (she laughs at the days) says:

    Wait! WHAT?

  62. Sharon says:

At first I thought you were joking. Your old, lovely, charming home!

  63. Dianna says:

But the kitchen, and everything else for that matter, just got finished! Just make sure that wherever you go there’s a wall for that oldest boy of yours to hold up. Hope the move goes well and you find a home equally beautiful.

  64. Lauren says:

Congratulations! The new owners will really love all the hard work you’ve put into the place.

  65. Charlotte says:

But your stove! Have you met your stove? I fell a wee bit in love with it.

  66. Jennifer says:

    Wild Life indeed.

  67. Misty says:

Aww…:( I hope you find another beautiful home..or one that after more work, will be as beautiful as this one has become! Will you still be where the snow flies?

  68. Paula says:

Your son will have to find a new wall to hold up though…

  69. Lilly says:

Oh, no! I’ve been a big fan of your house since the first time I read your ‘Big Yellow House’ blog years ago and I’ve cheered (to myself) all your hard work and renovations! I’m going to miss the place! But I’m sure you’re all moving somewhere equally wonderful. I thought you were kidding about the moving van being for you!!! I kinda feel like an aunt who wasn’t told the family’s moving ’till the truck showed up…..

  70. Kerry says:

Wow. I’m shocked. I wish your family the best of luck.

  71. Janet says:

    WOW!!!!
I so admire your secret keeping skills!

  72. Heather's Garden says:

I’m strangely disquieted by this development. If you alluded to it previously I completely missed it. I’m just hoping that there is reliable internet where you’re going because I can’t wait to hear all about it!

  73. Aubri says:

Adding to the above, I too have been reading since the Big Yellow House days…

    I can’t believe you’re moving… that’s… wow.

Congratulations? I won’t beg for details, but I might ask politely… when you have time, and are feeling up to it.

    Oh, good luck pretty one.

  74. sarah says:

Ditto to all above. I’m a little devastated - I was hoping for a little tour of the finished product and I am absolutely stunned at the amazing secret keeping! Good luck with the move!

  75. Ryann says:

Shocked. You are a good secret keeper. Can we see more house phots after you move?? I know you’ve been careful about stalkers and all that crazy jazz, but I would love to see more photos of the front of the house. It seems like a beautiful place! (and, no, I’m not a stalker) :)

  76. Cate says:

But, but, but, does the new house have a wall for your son to hold up?

  77. rebecca says:

I read your DIY blog, in which you’ve hinted at putting this house up for sale, so I’m not shocked. . . I am sad to see it go, though. I especially wanted to see what you did (were going to do) with the old pumpkin-orange room.

Your house is like your eighth child in your blog, so I’m excited to see the new place!

  78. meg says:

My guess is that there is a feature film being shot in your home and you are being relocated for a couple of months.

  79. Anna says:

    DUDE!!! Come to Vermont!! :)

  80. kellie says:

WOWOW…you are good. Best to you all in the move and hope it is to warmer weather..I will miss this house..
I have loved watching you and your family bring it back from a house to a home.

  81. Lady of Perpetual Chaos says:

At first I thought you were joking but when I saw the boxes and everything packed up I was so sad. Of course, you already live on the other side of the country from me and I’ll still be able to blog-stalk you…right?! I really hope this is a happy move in a direction you want to go.

  82. Shalini says:

WOW! Who knew? I love the house and the beautiful winter pics.. Are you moving to warmth? That I can understand! Best of luck with the move! Don’t lose sanity. I always hate moving!

  83. Nikki says:

Oh, my goodness — I have a hard-enough time moving just l’il old me from one apartment to another; the thought of moving a whole household of stuff gives me the shivers! Hope the transition goes well for all of you. Good luck.

  84. jc says:

OMG… but he’s holding up the wall!

  85. Maddy says:

If there were big black bears in my yard I’d move too! Come and stay in Australia with us, we have baseball… and bacon.

  86. t in hd says:

My guess is, it only “appears” Chris is moving. I tend to doubt anyone would go to the time and expense of that kitchen remodel just to move a few months later. ;-) Perhaps the house has to be cleared temporarily for some reason but, who knows?

  87. Jennifer says:

WHAT? You are ever the suspenseful blogger.

I will miss the pictures of your house.

  88. Pam says:

I’ve been reading your blog for about a year…your writing makes me laugh so hard that my kids want to know what is so funny…many posts have made me CONSIDER commenting, but only this one FORCED me to comment! I feel SO betrayed! How could you keep this from us?

Seriously, hope the move goes smoothly and that your new home does not require any renovating whatsoever!

  89. Snapper says:

If I had 7 kiddos, I’d have moved out long ago and left them there…lol. ;)
    Good Luck???

  90. Annie says:

I thought this post was a joke?! No?

    Good luck with your move!!

  91. ~Tammy~ says:

Am I the only reader who recalls you mentioning the renovation of the old house was being done with an eye to selling it ASAP? I couldn’t do it, myself…. fix a place up and then move away. Oh wait… yes I could… and did.

  92. ~annie says:

Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit. You’re even better at keeping secrets than my clan. Did the kids know? Did YOU even know? I hope this was all intentional and everything goes well wherever you’re headed. Most of all, I hope you keep on blogging!

  93. Jennifer says:

is there a wall in the new house for your son to hold up??

  94. Tammy H. says:

    Was it the bears? :)

  95. kelly says:

I will miss this house…I loved the floors, the porch, the new kitchen.

But I look forward to reading about the ‘adventure’ of moving a large family and getting settled into a new home, which I trust will be as warm and inviting as this one.

  96. maddy says:

Ok, it’s been said before (a hundred times??), but I LOVE your house and all you’ve done to it. And you are moving after all that great work?

But I hope you are moving somewhere good that you want to be!

All best to you & good luck with your move.

  97. SassyPants says:

There’s a house for sale right next door to me! I’ll start putting together your welcome basket

  98. Sue @ My Party of 6 says:

I will miss pictures of that lovely house. But as long as you pack up your blog and take it with you, I will be ok! Good luck.

  99. Lisa says:

    OH Chris

Good luck, I have read you since the Big Yellow house days and before Miles was born. I am kinda sad but way happy too. Hope you are.

    Lisa

  100. Amy says:

I really hope you ar moving for good reasons and that you don’t move away from your wonderful blog. I’ve been reading you for quite some time now, but don’t comment too often. Can’t wait to hear the details.

  101. Shannon says:

Is that why y’all remolded the kitchen? Happy packing, or is this a trick, lol.

  102. Shannon says:

    That should say remodeled, heehee.

  103. Jennifer says:

What?? You don’t just throw something like that out there without saying anything else! Details, woman! :)

  104. Jaackie says:

Did your husband get a job transfer? and you have to leave your beautiful home?

  105. Heidi says:

    Girl you are good!!

Hopefully the new place will have a resting post for your son!!

  106. jean says:

Wow, you brought me out of lurkdom too. OMG, your beautiful house! Good luck with your move and I wish you the absolute best in your new home :)

  107. momzen says:

    Chris,

I really like you and all. But ARE YOU CRAZY??!!?? After all that work? Don’t you even get to enjoy it? Well, I hope wherever you land it is EXACTLY what you want, and you are happy there. And you continue to write and post pictures. Good luck!

  108. lizinsumner says:

I hope your coming to Seattle!

  109. nrbp says:

TLC is doing a new reality show (working titles: “Are Those All Yours?”, “Don’t You Know What Causes That?”) and they had to move everything out of your house while they install the studio lights in your ceilings?

Seriously though, wishing all of you the most smooth process possible.

  110. Rae says:

You really are good at keeping a secret, Chris. Until a picture of the moving truck shows up!

  111. Jen says:

WTF?!!! Surely not? Though I guess that now you’ve finished this ‘project’, it must be a bit boring that you haven’t got any sheetrock or unpainted walls to tackle ;) Shame that you didn’t get to enjoy the kitchen a bit longer, though..

Best of luck with the move - look forward to seeing the next ‘project’…. sorry, ‘home’. :D

  112. Heather says:

You could totally work for the CIA.

Good luck with your move. Your new neighborhood will be lucky to have you.

  113. Lynn says:

I’ve only followed your blog for a while now and I do enjoy it. I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed reading everyone’s comments. You have confused them. My nephew plays baseball and practice is fixing to start here in the south and it does seem to go on all year. If you are moving maybe you are moving to warmer weather.

  114. Cheryl says:

but who’s gonna hold up that wall now?

  115. Barb says:

I thought it was a joke when you showed the moving van. I’m sure you’re a wee bit busy, but I hope you fill us in soon. :-)

  116. Linds says:

What? Where? Why? Huh??? I am just like the rest of them….how can you leave that kitchen???

  117. Tammie says:

Wow, you “punked” us all! Heck, I’m clear across the country and I’m sad you are moving, which is something weird, since it’s not like we are neighbors. :)
Good luck with organizing and packing, I’m sure you’ll post when you get settled in.

  118. Andrea says:

So judging by the pic today, it is true. And like Janet, I can only say: I could never keep such a secret! (Not that you tell us every little detail… you draw the line at training bras!)

  119. carol says:

Umm … will there be a wall for oldest son to hold up in the new digs?

    Sign me Shocked.

  120. CathyC says:

Wait. What? This wasn’t a joke? For real? But you haven’t finished it yet. What about the beautiful kitchen?
OK. I will try to get over it.
When you do settle into your new house (or is it another GORGEOUS fixer?) would you PLEASE rename your blog the Big Yellow House? I always ask, but really that was the reason why I even opened your blog up years ago–of course I loved it!
I CANNOT believe you are moving!!! I hope you move closer to me. I’m near Boston :) Will the new house have wallpaper? Is it yellow? Does your husband know?

  121. Katherine Hilton says:

I think I read about the upcoming move on DIY at some point, so I’m not completely shocked, but I AM surprised you haven’t blogged at all about the packing process until now! SO, are you moving to Oklahoma to be close to Susan?? Kidding. I know there’s an awful lot that you don’t talk about here, but it would be fun to know at least what REGION you’re moving to, and if it’s new construction or a fixer-upper! And what will all the town teams do without your kids??

  122. bookloverlori says:

Moving??? I’m betting on a “no” and that maybe you’re just messing with us. : )

  123. Celine says:

Good luck with the move! Please, if you have any wisdom to share I am all ears. If all goes well, we’ll be moving soon too and I am dreading the packing, the unpacking, the mess…
ugh. Good luck (again). I just tired myself out.

  124. Monique says:

    I am so surprised.

  125. Victoria says:

    Hmmmmmmm…. those pesky theives

  126. Victoria says:

or something spelled better than that?

  127. Not June Cleaver says:

Wow Chris! I’ve been around since The Big Yellow House too and I’m dying to know WHERE you are going. Hopefully somewhere near ME! Please update soon. What a surprise.

  128. nancy says:

Ok, I know I’m late to the party, but had to de-lurk to wish you good luck. I looked back over the last week or so of pics and noticed that they’ve all been extreme closeups or were taken outside. Clever you!

  129. Lori says:

So, I guess since the remodel was finished, you needed a little more drama in your life. I’m getting ready for my 13th move in 22 years! I hope your move goes smoothly.

  130. Karen says:

What HAPPENED? I hope everything is OK. I’m worrying about you, and hoping that you simply won the lottery and are moving to a mansion on the beach. Sending good thoughts your way.

  131. Brigitte says:

I will be so sad, I loved knowing you were (sort of) a neighbor. Now you will leave me, as Mir did - sob!

I hope the bottomed-out market makes an exception in your home’s case!

  132. sajithra says:

OMG!!! Why are the comments closed in the next post! Building up the anticipation/excitement/anxiety even??
All the best to you and your family Chris. I hope you got an awesome price for the house. After all the renovations and money/energy/love poured in to make it what it is today, the house deserves nothing but the best price possible!

  133. Cheryl says:

next time I’ll read some comments before I post one! clearly I am not the only one concerned for your wall.

  134. AW says:

Totally shocked and wishing you and your family the best. Can’t wait to find out where you’re headed!

  135. suasn thomason says:

God bless, your family is in my daily prayers…..
    suasn

  136. Kim says:

Wow really? What, how, when, where and why?

  137. MoonkidsMom says:

I have that feeling I have had once before. The feeling when my own parents told me they would be putting my childhood home up for sale and moving somewhere else. Nevermind the fact I was an adult, married, with a herd of kids of my own I was sad and wanted to stomp my foot and yell “hell no we won’t go!” over and over again, till they came to their senses about this moving bullcrap.

But I lived through it and I will survive my favorite blog going through a major move too. But if I yell “hell no we won’t go” will you call it all off?

It’s not all about me really .I do wish you well and hope its a move that makes you very happy. Can’t wait for the details.

  138. Tracey says:

I had to take a moment to digest this news.

At first, I felt so sad….I think I love this house almost as much as you do. But then, after a time, I got over it…because this means there is a whole new adventure ahead! What will it hold??

  139. Maureen says:

And leave that dream pantry…are you MAD?!

Ok…then I will just have to move in!

You can’t really be moving…I don’t believe it!

  140. Toni says:

    Wah!! Come back soon!

  141. Kathy says:

Nah. You’re not moving. Not your house, anyway. I’m going to guess that you went to all of this trouble to throw us off. You’re just moving your blog again, right? That’s quite the trouble to go through just to confuse us!!!! Right? Right? Stop teasing! Tell us what’s going on!!!

  142. Gretchen says:

wow, you meant it! What happened? where are you going? Having just done the whole moving thing last year, I wish you good luck and good weather. What do the kids think?

I’ll admit, my feelings are kind of hurt that you threw this at us out of the blue. But I know that in reality it’s none of my business whatsoever; you just are really good at making us all feel like your best friends! I can’t wait for your posts about the new place!

  143. Jennifer says:

Your short notice has me thinking…

I’m getting suspicious that you may be part of the Witness Protection Program.

  144. kate says:

I agree with janet ( above) what is going on? are the kids ok with this? after all that work - you havent had enough time to enjoy it - rob donated a thumb or something to the cause, did he not? stay, if only to honor his lost body bit…. are the kids freaking out? spill the details, sister.

ps - how did your “year off” end up going ? I can understand why you might have stoppedblogging about it - I mean, how many times can you write about the things that you HAVEN’T bought? but I found it interesting- and admirable…

good luck with your move! rememberto takeall your kids- ( I ‘d be the mother onthe news that you would hear about that left one upstairs sleeping or something! )

  145. kate says:

ps - If youre looking for another house to rehab, come on over !… lol

  146. kat says:

see? now i came to the comments hoping others would know what was going on, & be chatting about it. apparently you’re just a big, ole secret-keeper.

what will you do should you turn on the news one day, & learn that the house caved in without your son holding that one wall up?

  147. Sue says:

    Really? Good Luck :-)

  148. fidget says:

do you have the same bad habit as we do? Get a house pretty much just how you like it and then end up needing to move like 3 days after it’s finished because I so know ALL about that.

  149. DW says:

Well I hope you move some place warmer!

Hope you had a safe trip.

  150. Stacey says:

    blogger say what?!

  151. Annalise says:

You must be like us - can’t stick around once the house is nice to live in :) Good luck and hope it goes well!

  152. cristen says:

Roseann–I certainly don’t think I am a skimmer. But I am completely blindsided here. Was there something I missed? I thought the post with the moving van was just a joke or something…

Chris–I am so surprised. Looking forward to getting some info.

  153. jessica says:

well of course you are! things like this always happen when we least expect it. congratulations, may it be as hassle free as possible!

  154. Jacki says:

    What? Details please?

  155. Lorriane says:

Are you moving next door to Jon and Kate plus Eight?

  156. Di says:

Cant wait to see where it is that you’re moving, hehe. Maybe it’s to less of a small town like it seems you’ve always wanted. Must be such a big move from such a big house. Good luck.
