Now You Are Ten

How exactly this has happened, I don’t know. It seems like just last week you were a fat, bald baby who did nothing but smile. The time from then to now is mostly a blur. The days that seemed so terminally long when I was living them, living with four children aged four and under, have melded into years that have passed too quickly.

You and your younger brother have always been best friends.

DSC_0351_edited-1

Your personalities could not be more different. You are easy going and happy. Your brother is intense and brooding.

they alternately love each other and try to kill each other

You alternate between being the best of friends and the worst of enemies. The good thing is that both of you are able to laugh at yourselves. Also, that you are infinitely forgiving. It takes a lot to get you angry. Your brother will get angry with you and chase you around the house intent on killing you, meanwhile you will be running around, two steps ahead of him, laughing. Eventually your contagious laughter catches up with him. And he laughs too, in spite of himself.

Of all my children, you are the two I imagine still being best friends when you are adults.

    happy birthday to him!
And while I’m delurking, I’ll take the opportunity to wish you much happiness in this new chapter in your lives.

  20. Sue @ My Party of 6 says:

I could just DIE from the cuteness at your house. Or drown in dimples.

I had one turn 11 this week. It IS a blur. He was just in kindergarten last week, I think.

  21. Adrienne says:

The way you describe the closest brothers reminds me of my own boys (11 and nearly 10), and like you, I cannot figure out where the last 10 years went…my youngest will be 10 a week from tomorrow. Happy Birthday to your double digit guy, and btw, as a nearly-Clevelander, I LOVE his uniform!

  22. Annie says:

Chris, happy birthday to your blond, dimpled son! He is so handsome and I enjoy reading how he has such a close relationship with his younger brother - the pictures of them growing up together are so precious. He looks like such a sweetheart with that gorgeous hair - so innocent. Your family has been blessed with amazing genes.

PS: Love that he plays for the Indians in little league! I’m an Ohio girl and seeing that is very cool! :-)

  25. Cyndi says:

Happy birthday, big Ten! Having a brother/best friend is one of the best gifts there is, although at your age video games might seem like more fun.

  31. MamaGeph says:

Dang, you guys throw cute kids.

Does it feel strange to have the majority of your kiddos able to fend for themselves?

  32. Jen says:

    What BEAUTIFUL smiles!!!

  33. Heidi says:

My middle son just entered the double digits also 2 weeks ago.

    Where is the time going??

  34. Nikki says:

First, happy birthday to your dimply boy :)
Second, your children are beautiful. Enviable genetics there!
Third, I love all his Cleveland Indians gear. As mom to three boys (and an Ohioan) we have an abundance as well. Love it :)

  35. rebecca says:

I can’t recall if I’ve ever seen a pic of your husband, but that younger child looks just like him, in my mind. And blondie looks like you. How cool. Congrats on his birthday!

  37. Alyson says:

  41. Damsel says:

Happy Birthday!!!!!! Birthdays are so fun and special for us as a family. Hope your day was special, too!

And, may I add, that I am STILL amazed that you do not simply dive in and DROWN in the cuteness that explodes from the dimples on your children!

  42. kat says:

    happy ten!

  43. Lacy says:

That was such a great post - thanks for sharing. Brothers are hysterical. I have three boys and one thing I really appreciate about boys is how they can LET.THINGS.GO. One minute they’re killing eachother, and the next - best friends again. Happy Birthday handsome boy!

  44. Julie says:

    3/25? Me too.:) Happy birthday.

Chris says: Happy Birthday to you, too!

  45. Lyn says:

Happy Birthday, young man!!! Stay bubbly always. Those dimples are to die for, fo’ sure. :)

  46. Bre says:

Oh, the dimples. THE DIMPLES, they slay me, I am dead now, from the cuteness.

  47. Jennifer says:

    Happy Birthday!!

  48. Lisa says:

Chris, these birthday letters of yours always make me want to cry. And make my ovaries twitch for more babies. Please stop.
    Lisa

  49. wookie says:

Wow. Those dimples are still SO amazing. He is going to be such a favourite with the girls as he gets older.

  50. Karen (from Our Deer Baby) says:

Happy birthday to Kate’s cybertwin ^^ Maybe I should post about her birthday too, I am just a tad behind again :D

    Karen

  51. Jen says:

My oldest (of 3 boys) turned 18 yesterday. Eighteen. 18 entire years. I feel compelled to throw this fact into every conversation possible (like: That’s $18.76 — Oh! 18! Did I mention that I’m the mother of an 18 yo now?).

He was my (almost always) easy-going kid too and he still really is. But even today I can’t stop shaking my head that my chunky chunk sweet little baby is now all grown-up.

Your son is a very adorable 10. You have much to fear from the girls. They’re a scary bunch in their teens and it takes about 3 years for the boys to figure out what the heck’s going on.

  52. Jen says:

Oh, I just realized I’m a day behind — and they do share a birthday. Lots of 3/25 birthdays here!

  53. Johnna says:

A gorgeous birthday letter. They will appreciate these one day.

  54. liz says:

    TEN??? Happy Birthday!!

  55. Melody says:

Hope he (and those amazing dimples) has an amazing birthday!!

  56. Another Susan says:

Yesterday was my birthday too … altho I’m slightly older than him. I hope he had a great day!

  57. Patti says:

Yesterday was my daughters 10th birthday too! Thanks for sharing.

  58. Bonna says:

I absolutely adore the bathtub photo. They appear to be very happy in that photo. I think becoming 10 is BIG for all kids, because you have finally arrived and cannot be considered a baby, and not so much a little kid anymore. I must say that I am quite envious of the tributes you write to your children. Although I love my two dearly, I am not the most demonstrative of mothers nor can I write my way out of a paper bag.

  59. Anna says:

The dimples! They are a killer! Those Texas girls are gonna be banging down your door for chance with one of your cuties…

  60. Rae says:

I honestly don’t know how you did it with four four and under. Four six and under is just about killing me. But you do what you have to do, I guess!

  61. Rae says:

Oh, and I should say that he is adorable, they are adorable, and what you got in the end is the most incredible pack of boys… wow. Hard work pays off. :)
