Now You Are Ten
March 25, 2009
How exactly this has happened, I don’t know. It seems like just last week you were a fat, bald baby who did nothing but smile. The time from then to now is mostly a blur. The days that seemed so terminally long when I was living them, living with four children aged four and under, have melded into years that have passed too quickly.
You and your younger brother have always been best friends.
Your personalities could not be more different. You are easy going and happy. Your brother is intense and brooding.
You alternate between being the best of friends and the worst of enemies. The good thing is that both of you are able to laugh at yourselves. Also, that you are infinitely forgiving. It takes a lot to get you angry. Your brother will get angry with you and chase you around the house intent on killing you, meanwhile you will be running around, two steps ahead of him, laughing. Eventually your contagious laughter catches up with him. And he laughs too, in spite of himself.
Of all my children, you are the two I imagine still being best friends when you are adults.
Welcome to double digits.

March 25th, 2009 at 5:33 pmOh gosh, Chris. I don’t know how you manage it all. raising 7 kids so close in age, homeschooling, writing, running a house. And I’m sure that’s not all.
March 25th, 2009 at 5:33 pmI loved this post. And I love your child’s smile and happy demeanor.
happy birthday to him!
And while I’m delurking, I’ll take the opportunity to wish you much happiness in this new chapter in your lives.
I could just DIE from the cuteness at your house. Or drown in dimples.
I had one turn 11 this week. It IS a blur. He was just in kindergarten last week, I think.
March 25th, 2009 at 5:36 pmThe way you describe the closest brothers reminds me of my own boys (11 and nearly 10), and like you, I cannot figure out where the last 10 years went…my youngest will be 10 a week from tomorrow. Happy Birthday to your double digit guy, and btw, as a nearly-Clevelander, I LOVE his uniform!
March 25th, 2009 at 5:58 pmHappy Birthday, Blonde One! Wow, his baby pics look so much like Miles! I always wanted a sibling close in age to be my best friend. Lucky boys!
March 25th, 2009 at 6:04 pmsuch cute photos. what lucky boys to have each other. happy b’day to him.
March 25th, 2009 at 6:07 pmChris, happy birthday to your blond, dimpled son! He is so handsome and I enjoy reading how he has such a close relationship with his younger brother - the pictures of them growing up together are so precious. He looks like such a sweetheart with that gorgeous hair - so innocent. Your family has been blessed with amazing genes.
PS: Love that he plays for the Indians in little league! I’m an Ohio girl and seeing that is very cool!
March 25th, 2009 at 6:50 pmHappy birthday, big Ten! Having a brother/best friend is one of the best gifts there is, although at your age video games might seem like more fun.
March 25th, 2009 at 6:57 pmHappy birthday to a handsome boy! I hope he enjoys it! (And also, congratulations to you). (I mean, the mom deserves some recognition too, right?)
March 25th, 2009 at 6:58 pmHAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY!!!
by the way… Miles looks just like him and I had never noticed it until you posted these young pictures of #4.
Chris says: I think it’s the hair and the dimples!
March 25th, 2009 at 7:07 pmHow close are they in age? They are simply adorable and each have amazing smiles!
March 25th, 2009 at 7:19 pmOMG! How he looks like Miles in the younger pics! I never would have thought that they looked that much alike.
March 25th, 2009 at 7:21 pmHAPPY B-DAY LITTLE MAN
Chris says: THANK YOU!
March 25th, 2009 at 7:26 pmDang, you guys throw cute kids.
Does it feel strange to have the majority of your kiddos able to fend for themselves?
March 25th, 2009 at 7:34 pmWhat BEAUTIFUL smiles!!!
March 25th, 2009 at 7:47 pmMy middle son just entered the double digits also 2 weeks ago.
Where is the time going??
March 25th, 2009 at 7:58 pmFirst, happy birthday to your dimply boy

March 25th, 2009 at 8:10 pmSecond, your children are beautiful. Enviable genetics there!
Third, I love all his Cleveland Indians gear. As mom to three boys (and an Ohioan) we have an abundance as well. Love it
I can’t recall if I’ve ever seen a pic of your husband, but that younger child looks just like him, in my mind. And blondie looks like you. How cool. Congrats on his birthday!
March 25th, 2009 at 8:11 pmPS - That bathtub picture could not be more adorable.
March 25th, 2009 at 8:15 pmLady, you have got some cute boys! LOVE those dimples! My boys are 4 1/2 and 20 months, but I love watching their dynamic. They are pretty different, too. Really enjoying your blog!
March 25th, 2009 at 8:29 pmThis was so sweet it made me cry.
March 25th, 2009 at 8:56 pmThis is so sweet. I love the pics of them together. Yes, from these pics I can see them best friends years from now as well.
Happy 10th birthday young man!!
March 25th, 2009 at 9:08 pmI’ve never commented before but have been reading your blog for a couple of years now. I just have to say you have the most gorgeous children! Dimples to die for. You are a lucky woman
March 25th, 2009 at 9:24 pmHappy Birthday!!!!!! Birthdays are so fun and special for us as a family. Hope your day was special, too!
And, may I add, that I am STILL amazed that you do not simply dive in and DROWN in the cuteness that explodes from the dimples on your children!
March 25th, 2009 at 9:43 pmhappy ten!
March 25th, 2009 at 11:06 pmThat was such a great post - thanks for sharing. Brothers are hysterical. I have three boys and one thing I really appreciate about boys is how they can LET.THINGS.GO. One minute they’re killing eachother, and the next - best friends again. Happy Birthday handsome boy!
March 26th, 2009 at 12:11 am3/25? Me too.:) Happy birthday.
Chris says: Happy Birthday to you, too!
March 26th, 2009 at 1:14 amHappy Birthday, young man!!! Stay bubbly always. Those dimples are to die for, fo’ sure.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:27 amOh, the dimples. THE DIMPLES, they slay me, I am dead now, from the cuteness.
March 26th, 2009 at 2:59 amHappy Birthday!!
March 26th, 2009 at 3:18 amChris, these birthday letters of yours always make me want to cry. And make my ovaries twitch for more babies. Please stop.
March 26th, 2009 at 7:22 amLisa
Wow. Those dimples are still SO amazing. He is going to be such a favourite with the girls as he gets older.

March 26th, 2009 at 7:35 amMy oldest (of 3 boys) turned 18 yesterday. Eighteen. 18 entire years. I feel compelled to throw this fact into every conversation possible (like: That’s $18.76 — Oh! 18! Did I mention that I’m the mother of an 18 yo now?).
He was my (almost always) easy-going kid too and he still really is. But even today I can’t stop shaking my head that my chunky chunk sweet little baby is now all grown-up.
Your son is a very adorable 10. You have much to fear from the girls. They’re a scary bunch in their teens and it takes about 3 years for the boys to figure out what the heck’s going on.
March 26th, 2009 at 9:14 amOh, I just realized I’m a day behind — and they do share a birthday. Lots of 3/25 birthdays here!
March 26th, 2009 at 9:15 amA gorgeous birthday letter. They will appreciate these one day.
March 26th, 2009 at 9:35 amTEN??? Happy Birthday!!
March 26th, 2009 at 9:59 amHope he (and those amazing dimples) has an amazing birthday!!
March 26th, 2009 at 11:33 amYesterday was my birthday too … altho I’m slightly older than him. I hope he had a great day!
March 26th, 2009 at 11:47 amYesterday was my daughters 10th birthday too! Thanks for sharing.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:51 pmI absolutely adore the bathtub photo. They appear to be very happy in that photo. I think becoming 10 is BIG for all kids, because you have finally arrived and cannot be considered a baby, and not so much a little kid anymore. I must say that I am quite envious of the tributes you write to your children. Although I love my two dearly, I am not the most demonstrative of mothers nor can I write my way out of a paper bag.
March 26th, 2009 at 8:54 pmThe dimples! They are a killer! Those Texas girls are gonna be banging down your door for chance with one of your cuties…
March 26th, 2009 at 9:19 pmI honestly don’t know how you did it with four four and under. Four six and under is just about killing me. But you do what you have to do, I guess!
March 29th, 2009 at 1:16 amOh, and I should say that he is adorable, they are adorable, and what you got in the end is the most incredible pack of boys… wow. Hard work pays off.
