Four Year Olds and Baseball
April 1, 2009
The game the four year old and under team played last weekend had to end early. Too many kids were crying in the dugout that they were tired. Or hungry. Or didn’t want to play anymore.
Miles wasn’t crying. He was too busy laying in the infield playing with the dirt.
Or practicing his catching skills.
Or telling his team mates, “Good job, guys!”
Or trying to wrestle the ball out of the hands of his team mates.
Whenever the ball is hit the kids all run to it like moths to a flame. And then they tackle each other and run away with the ball. I think they are confusing the game with football.
Disclaimer: No one was injured in the making of this video.
You will want to watch this in full screen size so that you can see it clearly.
Miles is in the outfield behind and to the right of the kid at third base. You can see him laying down in the dirt.
Then you see another boy on his team to the left do some spinning ninja sort of moves. I did not know this at the time, but apparently the boy asked Miles if he wanted to “fight.” Miles does not know the meaning of “fight.” He does, however, know how to fight.
So what you see is the other boy doing some spinning and kicks in the air. Miles jumps up and does a spinning kick getting the boy in his stomach. And then he finishes him off by throwing the glove at his head.
It would probably be wrong for me to admit how hard we all laughed later in the evening when we were watching the video. Especially since Miles kept saying over and over, “He said he wanted to fight!”
This is 4yr old baseball at its best.

LOL too cute & funny
April 1st, 2009 at 1:21 amGawd, I forgot how much I loved the kids building sandcastles in the outfield in T-ball. This is so great and yet so real. Then they grow up to be 14 year old baseball players or ballerina’s or what have you. If someone could bottle this and patent it, they would make a million. Thanks for sharing!
April 1st, 2009 at 2:11 amOMG!!! He’s adorably cute. I wish Lil would love to play rough like that. I gave him an option to choose the other day if he would like to sign up for either an Art or swimming class. He chose the former. Even though he loves swimming as much as drawing. I’m alrite with either one, anyway. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your fantastic little boy performing like a star.
April 1st, 2009 at 4:06 amUGGHH… Yankees. Make sure your boys keep wearing those Red Sox hats!!!!
April 1st, 2009 at 5:48 amDid your other sons cringe at the Yankees uniform???
I LOVE IT!
I have the same shirt and hat but my shirt says Jeter on the back!
Way too cute…I love love love the baseball posts!
April 1st, 2009 at 6:33 amthat was awesome! made my day.
April 1st, 2009 at 6:56 amI love the photo….5 point harness car seat and giant baseball helmut. Too sweet.
April 1st, 2009 at 7:12 amLOVE IT. I remember the first year of baseball. As a parent you just prayed that your MLB bound superstar was not the most distracted kid on the field. Because as long as he wasn’t the worst you knew he could still be a star.
April 1st, 2009 at 7:21 amHeh, I was going to make a Yankees comment as well, but I’ve been beaten to it. But Kathleen’s “giant baseball helmet” comment is making me now think of “Dark Helmet” from “Spaceballs”, and trying to compare him and Miles!
April 1st, 2009 at 7:54 amMiles has a good arm. I see pitching in his future. He totally NAILED that kid with his glove–and I’m sure the kid deserved it.
Also, is he making the “rock on” sign in the last picture? Because if he is, I love him even more. If it’s just doing things with his hands that four year olds do, well, he’s still really stinkin’ cute.
April 1st, 2009 at 7:58 amOh my goodness - the picture of him giving the thumbs up is too adorable!
Maybe you could stick Miles on the “crazy mom” to take her down!
April 1st, 2009 at 8:29 amToo cute. Padawan Learner never played baseball, but he did hang from the netting inside the soccer goal when he was four. Ah, I remember it well.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:30 amI loved these games, we call it T-ball around here. My oldest would stand out in the field grabbing fistfuls of dirt and then letting it slowly sift through his fingers. He was “making smoke” according to him. LOL Enjoy it somewhere between t-ball and Khory league it gets a little boring. LOL
April 1st, 2009 at 8:54 amand now that little boy learned the important lesson of: never ask a kid who has 5 older brothers if he wants to fight.
too funny!
April 1st, 2009 at 10:17 amhaha.. too funny! My 4 yr old and soon to be 6 are playing baseball, well Tball… for the first time in few weeks. Guess thats what I may be seeing!!
Thanks for sharing!

Chris - The picture of Miles giving thumbs up to his teammates is priceless.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:28 amoh my goodness! you hit a home run w/ that one!! I know- how corny can I get. Really- he is such a handsome young guy, and has a good kick!
April 1st, 2009 at 11:14 amWhat fun! Miles looks like he’s having a blast and he looks very cool in his official uniform.
I remember my son at the same age, getting all dressed in the cool catcher’s gear, in front of everyone, motioning to me to come over to him and he whispered through the chain link fence, “Don’t tell anyone that this is me.”
April 1st, 2009 at 11:24 amThat looks like the game to be at. Nevermind all those older boys with their playing by the rules and stuff. I, also, like the game being called due to whining. Who says their is no crying in baseball?
April 1st, 2009 at 11:42 amToo cute! Sports at this age are always just so adorable!
April 1st, 2009 at 12:15 pmHilarous!
April 1st, 2009 at 1:39 pmIs he trying to make the Hook em Horns sign with his hand? Already a Texan huh??
Rock On, Miles!
April 1st, 2009 at 2:03 pmBaseball is your game!
I am going to assume that Miles is fully integrated into his Austin life and is giving us the “hook ‘em horns” sign in that last photo!
April 1st, 2009 at 2:36 pmThank GOODNESS! Somehow, I figured with all his older brother baseball fanatics, that Miles would be a star at this age already. My son was always lying down and playing in the dirt or throwing his glove. Drove us nuts. Now, though, I know he’s normal. Or at least as normal as Miles, which is definitely good enough for me!
April 1st, 2009 at 2:37 pmWe signed the boys up for the first time this year and I cannot hardly wait.
That thumb’s up photo is beyond awesome.
April 1st, 2009 at 3:06 pmYour boy looks like he is having the time of his life- what more could you ask for?
April 1st, 2009 at 3:28 pmLove it…what a riot! The thumbs up picture is the cutest thing ever!
April 1st, 2009 at 3:35 pmI remember when T-ball first came around in the mid-70’s. My little brother was on it the first season it was offered in our town. It was THE BEST fun I’ve ever had as the big sister who had to hang out in the stands during Baseball season!
So many funny incidents! Backwards runs were common, or coaches/dads running out to turn them around & point them the right way as they ran. ‘Little anthony’ being told to ‘get your glove dirty’ & reaching down, picking up a handful of dirt and dumping it on his glove, as the ball rolled neatly past him. Mostly I recall their clothing issues.
The league provided T-shirts & hats, the little boys were expected to wear own shorts & rubber-toed sneakers. it was not possible to buy baseball pants, shoes, socks or, ahem, supporters, small enough to fit. a few boys, youngest brothers in families like yours, wore hand-me-down clothes and shoes which were too big. Their shoes curled up at the toes like court jester shoes, but nothing could convince them to just wear sneakers. Their pants were rolled at waist & ankle, gradually unfurling as the game went on. The hats were all adjusted as small as possible, yet still sat dangerously low, and slid down over their eyes at crucial moments. The t-shirts were ’small’ boy, but not big toddler sizes, so some had to be cut off mid-number in order for the boy to run. Small enough gloves were hard to find, many boys wore ‘toy’ gloves. Others carried the hand-me-down gloves, dropping them in order to chase the ball down. No matter, the balls were tennis balls instead of proper hard baseballs.
These guys on your team at least look the part!
April 1st, 2009 at 4:22 pmI think it was the Yankees uniforms that brought it out. Not the fighting - the disinterest in baseball.
April 1st, 2009 at 5:18 pmLOVE IT!
April 1st, 2009 at 8:23 pmI am really impressed you managed to get him in the baseball get-up and using the equipment in some way out there. My 4 year-old runs from organized sporting experiences like he’s fleeing a burning building.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:32 pmToo funny!!!! I laughed so hard that I cried. My son is 3 and will be playing ball next summer. I can’t wait.
April 2nd, 2009 at 12:54 amLearned at home - all these wonderful qualities he shows in these awesome pictures.
Do you EVER have struggles raising so many boys? I just sometimes feel so bad (guilty) that I struggle with some of the messes, smells, noise (not that girls can’t be/do any of these things…)
April 2nd, 2009 at 4:31 amHow old does Miles have to be before you will let me marry him? Or maybe one of my daughters? He is more adorable than words can express!
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:30 amChris, thank you!!!! You some how always make me feel like a not so terrible mom. Like when on one of my 3 sons poors laundry detergent on the floor. You make me laugh. For that you deserve a great big hug and THANKS!!! I appreciate what you are doing.
April 5th, 2009 at 1:55 amAwwwww, that last pic is priceless. 4 going on 14, eh?
April 7th, 2009 at 12:09 amCan’t wait for my lil’ boy to turn 4!
