just a little creek

creek

I pass by this almost every day. Driving about 50mph. It is a small meandering creek on the edge of a farm where yellow cows and sheep graze. I’d like to hop the fence that separates it from the busy road and sit down under the tree next to the creek. It seems so peaceful.

On the other side of the road is a long dirt driveway. In the distance you can see some buildings, a house maybe? I am not sure. I don’t know how long the driveway is. It looks pretty long. I can’t get used to judging distances in this flat landscape.

One afternoon, Miles pointed to the dirt driveway and shouted, “Don’t go down there! That is where the werewolves live!”

My oldest son and I started laughing. I have no idea where Miles ever heard of werewolves or what he thinks they are.

“How do you know that werewolves live down there?” we asked.

“Look at the road! It is made of dirt!” he answered like it was the most obvious thing ever.

Before we could even start laughing he shook his head and followed up with, “Duuuuhhhhh,” because clearly his brother and I are both stupid.

“What are werewolves, Miles?”

“Well, I tell you they are not UNICORNS!”

That is good to know.

WHAT!? I didn’t know this - Thanks, Miles! ;-) He is such a darling! :D Such a picturesque scene - so typically Texan, reminding me why I finally gave in and fell in love with the state.

  2. mythoughtsonthat says:

    Oh! Really good to know!

  3. Sara says:

Bwahahaha! I’d say werewolves by definition are the ANTI-unicorn. Love that kid.

  4. Dawn says:

How do you not simply die of the cuteness of this child?

  5. carol says:

This one made me laugh out loud. Which doesn’t happen often. I had a niece that when she was about 3 or 4 would wear a pair of bellbottoms and I would call her a hippie. She would say “I’m not a hippie!” So one day I asked her what she thought a hippie was. Her answer was some kind of small wild cat. Kids are great.

  6. Paula says:

I would hang a swing on that lazy branch… and slowly swing the day away… what a great picture… reminds me of home.

  7. Lilly says:

Ha ha! I love how Miles explains things…
Maybe down that dirt road there’s a big house, a little run down but beautiful, that needs renovation and a big family to live in it… Although it seems that all the friends your kids have met in your new neighborhood might keep you there. Do you miss your big ‘yellow’ house?

  8. t in hd says:

For some reason, that scene reminds me of something out of a Laura Ingalls book. I love trees like that.

  9. Woman with Kids says:

Well duh! It’s a shame the things our kids have to tell us… mine are always amazed I haven’t choked on a spoon yet.

  10. Keyona says:

HA! I’m very curious to know what he thinks they are…you know, besides NOT being pretty horses with horns on their heads.

  11. just a girl says:

It’s common knowledge that werewolves live at the end of dirt roads,
    it is a nice creek

Chris says: See I did not know this. And yes, it really is.

  12. Colleen says:

Wow, that picture is stunning. Really nice.

And Miles is awesome. He’s right about the werewolves, I’m pretty sure.

  13. Cary says:

You feel peace when you pass by and Miles horror, or maybe excitement in the chance to fight some werewolves.

  14. peepnroosmom says:

Well Duuuuuuuuhhhhhhh! He is so cute, and smart!

  15. Becky says:

I bet the creek is handy when it comes to protecting the werewolves against vampires…since those are not supposed to be able to cross bodies of water.

I have a feeling that this ties in with Harry Potter. Y’know, Shrieking Shack and so on.

  16. Cate says:

Hmmm. One way to access my neighborhood is to turn down a dirt road. I always did wonder about my neighbors. and that would explain a lot.

  17. tammy says:

    UNICORNS
That’s the picture i want to see. Keep your camera hsndy. I hear they are quick.

  18. Victoria says:

    best conversation ever!

  19. jenB says:

That is adorable! And that crik is beautiful.

  20. Jackie says:

What a wonderful scene .. I tried to get a closer look, and got that “Oops! You don’t have permission to view this photo” stuff. Darn, I hate when that happens. Miles sure is a keeper.

  21. Brigitte says:

Oh, gee, I take scenic detours down dirt roads all the time, and had no idea of the danger I was in! :-o

  22. Tricia says:

Crap, I live at the end of a dirt road?? How did I not know this…

  23. Annette says:

    Tricia made me laugh!

I think you should bring your werewolf neighbors a copy of this picture. They would surely be so thankful they wouldn’t eat you.

  24. Lisa says:

He sounds like an amazing and hilarious kid. That photograph is amazing and I could look at it and daydream all day.

  25. Katie in MA says:

I agree with the commenter (commentor?) who brought up the Harry Potter-esque quality. You should ask him where unicorns live. Maybe print out a local map and have him plot all the beasties? Sounds like a fun rainy day project!

  26. Carola says:

    He is unbelievably cute!

  27. reen says:

Love that vintage-y sleepy Texan scene. I may have passed this creek before.

I am so glad I no longer live at the end of a dirt road - who knew?!?

  28. Bronnie says:

    Hahah… love kiddies imaginations :)

  29. Sarah @ BecomingSarah.com says:

LOL what a cutie! I’m very glad to know that werewolves and unicorns aren’t the same =)

  30. Nicole says:

Thank GOD I live in the asphalt jungle where there’s not a dirt road to be found for miles. Although my 4 year-old would be bummed because right now, he wants to either run into a werewolf or turn into one about as much as a kid can want anything. I, too, am mystified by where he even hears about this stuff.

  31. vermontmommy says:

Love the photograph. Love the story.

  32. Ani says:

I thought werewolves lived in the Shrieking Shack. And the unicorns lived in the forbidden forest. But what do I know, I need to stop reading Harry Potter.

  33. Miss Peach says:

Chris! It’s been a long time but I’ve been catching up on the blog… lots of doings in your world! Anyway, just wanted to say hi and that this made me laugh so hard. Hope you guys are all great and loving Texas. Yeehaw!
