“Baseball Ready!”
I think I shouted that more times this season than should really be allowed in a normal person’s life. My 8 year old son is always ready. He doesn’t play baseball for “fun,” remember. But still I shout it anyway because he is too old for me to shout how cute he looks in his baseball costume uniform.
He was forced to take the past week off from playing baseball when he sprained his thumb. Not in a baseball game, but a rather unfortunate neighborhood Dodge Ball injury. He was so excited to get back in time to play the last game of the season. A game that would determine the first place winner in the 8U division.
Ironically enough they were playing the same team they beat in the first tournament and lost to in the second tournament.
It was about 9000 degrees out. (Yes, fellow Texas dwellers, there is no reason to point out to me that it will get hotter than this in the summer. I understand that. But still, it was HOT today.)
A fact which really has no bearing on the game. I just wanted to throw it out there so you could fully appreciate how much I was sweating. Also, look how cute he is.
It was a great game. For a couple innings it looked like we might not win. Then, the bottom of the final inning my son on first, two outs, the next boy up brought him home for the win. There was much cheering.
Saturday is the closing ceremonies. They will be getting their first place trophies. Baseball is officially over for everyone but my oldest son.
I have no idea what I am going to do with all my free time. Other than lounge by the pool. And sweat while I count to seven over and over again.

Oh so you are back from a busy season. Missed you here!
May 27th, 2009 at 1:43 amBTW, from when did 8 yr olds become too old to be called cute? They are cute anyway. I’m sure that if you didn’t have your other ‘babies’ after him, you’d still be calling him a baby!!!
Gah - how can there be so much height variation between these little guys? Cute last photo.
May 27th, 2009 at 1:47 amSounds to me like you should get IN the pool if it’s really that hot!!
May 27th, 2009 at 2:33 amCongrats on the end of the season. We don’t get to finish for a few more weeks. Personally I think 7am is a good time for games, before it is too hot, but no one listens to me!
May 27th, 2009 at 2:40 amI hope you have found every wonderful pools there, practically in every neighborhood (those are/were usually free.) Is the Tarrytown library still open, it is wonderful! (I lived on the outskirts - could not have afforded to live there…)
May 27th, 2009 at 5:24 amThere will also be, I predict, some lounging in your house reveling in your a/c!!
May 27th, 2009 at 7:24 amWhy anyone would give up New England for Texas is beyond me…
May 27th, 2009 at 8:29 amCongrats on win - and yes - he is very cute;)
May 27th, 2009 at 8:39 amI have one left and the playoffs start Saturday. Is it wrong to hope he loses and it’s all over soon?
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who obsessively counts when we’re at the pool.
My DH has a shot at a promotion that would take us to Dallas. I’ve been there in August… 115. I don’t know if I can survive Texas.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:42 amThat’s a great smile he has there in the second photo. He’s very cute. I’m glad he loves baseball so much and that they won!
May 27th, 2009 at 8:53 amYay!! First place!
Why is it boys/men get to look decent in 9000 degree weather. Anything over 55 and my hair would like everyone to notice it.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:54 amYou know it’s gonna get hotter, right?
May 27th, 2009 at 8:56 amOur baseball season is just getting started, but we haven’t hit 75 degrees yet this year. We’re gearing up for our last hockey tournament of the season this weekend (then done with hockey until Sept). My 9 year oild son is also on 2 baseball teams, and has been practicing (try outs) for about a month, first game this week was cancelled due to rain. My 12 yo daughter plays fast pitch & slow pitch (2 teams) and her first game was last week. They play until August 1st here, but I’m sure it’s way to hot to play then in TX. How can North Dakota seem so far from TX when it’s the same country?
May 27th, 2009 at 9:19 amDoes your daughter play softball/t-ball(?)… just curious if she wants to be like the boys, or won’t consider it because it’s a boy thing.
Isn’t it fun keeping up with kids at the pool. Maybe tying some type of colored ribbon around their necks would make it easier!
May 27th, 2009 at 9:57 amI had to laugh at the counting part - I’m an expert at counting to six…I do it a million times in the summer by the pool!
May 27th, 2009 at 10:07 amHe looks so serious in the first shot while he definitely looks like a “kid” in the second. Gotta love how they mature right before our eyes. My little guy also ends his baseball season this Saturday. I’m SO ready for it to be finished!
Did your 8 year old wear a splint on his sprained thumb? And how did you determine that it was sprained instead of broken? Just curious because I tweaked my thumb 2 days ago while I practiced with my son.
May 27th, 2009 at 10:18 amSeriously!?! When will you ever get to lounge by the pool with ONLY your kids? I always have extras and have to count higher than normal - throws off my groove (and interrupts my trashy novel reading)
May 27th, 2009 at 10:34 amCount to seven over and over again? You must teach me your trick for getting your kids to all agree to the same activity. And I only have TWO to try to corral!
May 27th, 2009 at 11:02 amKeys to surviving what’s coming:
Do all physical activity before 9 AM or after 8 PM. Enjoy the AC. Find a pool, river and/or lake. Submerge.
Buy one of those sun screens for your car.
I hated Texas summers but only because my history of melanoma pretty much kept me from being able to enjoy the pool so I ice skated at malls in Dallas…. a lot.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:12 amHey Chris,
Any luck on selling your renovated old house yet?
Just curious!
Chris says: Ha, no. Not AT ALL.
May 27th, 2009 at 11:18 amWait until football season. I hear people in texas are REALLY serious about their football…..
May 27th, 2009 at 11:53 amI do that too! Swimming is such a stressful time for me because I am always afraid someone will go under and I won’t notice.
Enjoy your hot summer! I wish I could move south and enjoy the heat sitting poolside.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:03 pmLove the counting to seven. I count only to four . . . but over and over and over again. When I have only two or three with me, it is just weird.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:34 pmLove the “count to 7 over and over again.” I feel I spend my day doing that… of course my hands only go to 3. :- )
May 27th, 2009 at 1:14 pmPool and A/c will be your new pastime
May 27th, 2009 at 1:22 pmLooks like they all taking a leak to celebrate the victory !
Chris says: Hahahahaha. Uh, none of us thought of that when posing them. I still maintain it would have been way cuter for them to have sat on the bleachers…
May 27th, 2009 at 2:03 pmI had to keep looking at that picture to try and tell which kid it was. All your kids are morphing into one dimpled, tan boy with longish hair in my head! I figured out that it is Mr. Serious. Have fun with your free time!
May 27th, 2009 at 2:20 pmGreat pictures! What do you use for a camera?
Enjoy the free time…
May 27th, 2009 at 4:06 pmFree time? What free time? I am constantly amazed at how your life goes from no-free-time-am-at-baseball-games to no-free-time-am-at-football-games. You have free time?!
Use it to sleep, woman. I know this free time is just some ploy to lure you into a false sense of liberty before you get sucked into football.
May 27th, 2009 at 4:21 pmAnd do y’all have a pool in your very own backyard? or is there a community pool? I’ve heard there are some wonderful natural swimming holes around Austin….
May 27th, 2009 at 5:13 pmCongrats on the win! I bet the boys were on cloud nine. The parents too I would imagine.
I love the last picture. The all look adorable. Is this the team with the hard core coach? How did the other boy’s teams do?
You are so right about the Texas weather. Invest in the spray bottles that have a fan on them. 1) it will keep you cool 2) it will keep the kids busy and cool… well until they start fighting over it or well break it.
May 27th, 2009 at 5:38 pmBaseball is done here as well. We opted out of all-stars and I am loving it!
Congrats on a surviving another baseball season.
May 27th, 2009 at 6:40 pmWhen my nephew was pitching, my sister-in-law used to yell -”Rock Steady!”. WTF? That drove me and everyone else nuts!
May 27th, 2009 at 7:59 pmOH not “another one bites the dust” then, maybe “flash gordon” no that’s not right, all though he does look flash, maybe “you’re my best friend”, nope that’s not it, then it must be “we are the champions” coz they really do look like little champs.
May 28th, 2009 at 4:19 amok… I saw the headline, and for a brief second thought you meant “cue..QUEEN” as in the rock band. I know, I am dating myself. Must be the Styx/REO/Journey Concert tix we have for this week… it is ALL coming back.
May 28th, 2009 at 9:56 amGood luck with the Texas heat… I still believe that part of my brain melted when I visited Dallas years ago.
Exactly what does ‘baseball ready’ mean? I’m thinking taking the appropriate stance - but I thought I’d check -
Son is very cute - don’t ya just love a man in uniform? Even if he is a little man?
Oh and did you take a picture of the back of the team for the height variations or are they all having a ‘group pee?’
Honestly that was my first thought. I was cracking up here at my desk.
Enjoy the r & r & s …
Chris says: Baseball ready just means getting ready to play, which for some of the kids means not spinning around in the outfield or laying down in the dirt
May 28th, 2009 at 10:48 amI have to say, that is one cute 8 year old. And I don’t even like baseball! Good luck with the sweating…at least you’ll have a glow?
May 28th, 2009 at 11:26 am…. counting to seven? Hmmm….
Chris says: Yeeessssss, since I have seven children.
May 28th, 2009 at 4:47 pmThat last pic is too cute!!!
May 28th, 2009 at 11:14 pmYou are being featured on Five Star Friday!

Cue Queen?-Oh, We are the champions. It took me a couple days to get the title- but then I felt so clever I had to let you know I had figured it out.
I once made the mistake of taking 12 pre-schooler to the beach ( with one other adult- I am not that crazy). I counted to 12, non-stop for two hours!
May 29th, 2009 at 2:50 pmSO cute.
May 29th, 2009 at 8:06 pmcute! he looks so much like your daughter!
i love the last photo of the team!
ooo a pool! that’s a definite positive for the move! couldn’t you buddy them all up instead of counting to 7?
May 29th, 2009 at 11:38 pmYou know he’s my favorite.
And you can come here if you’re missing baseball; we have FOUR MORE WEEKS before our season ends.
Hooray.
May 31st, 2009 at 10:15 amAm I really unfamiliar with sports or does it look as though all those boys are taking a group pee?
May 31st, 2009 at 8:47 pmI so know what you mean. Wish I had a dime for every time I’ve said “field hockey ready”!
June 2nd, 2009 at 9:30 amSadly, you did mean “Queen” and I didn’t get it until I had an A HA moment later…
see, told you my brains melted in Texas.
