The Number of Days in the Week

Saturday was game day for the 8 and 10 yr old boys. The 8 yr old little bobble heads played first. When they are out there running around you forget how little they truly are. They can do so many things for themselves at this age.

Then you capture this moment and remember how small they still are in the grand scheme of life.

The coach on his knee to meet them at eye level. The other coaches snapping their chin straps for them because they can’t do it themselves. Or tying their cleats for them.

Ten year olds are different. Sturdier. Older. More like miniature men.

They can fasten their own chin straps. They can get their own pads on. They definitely can tie their own shoes, though my son will still ask me to tie his cleats because he can’t get them tight enough.

The first week of practice the coach went around and asked the kids what number they wanted to be. My cute, yet blonde in every sense of the word, son thought the coach was merely asking him his favorite number. As if that would be totally normal for your coach to walk up to you in the middle of warm-ups and ask you your favorite number.

The coach was asking you what number you want on your jersey.

Oooooh, I thought he was just making conversation. You know, getting to know me.

Do people frequently just ask you what your favorite number is — completely out of the blue?

Well, now that you mention it… not really.

I wore 7 in middle school, then 17 in high school/college. My son was born on 7/17. Best lucky number EVER!

  2. Candy says:

    Yes it is! It’s a magic number…

Now I have that song in my head…sigh.

  3. Cincy says:

My kids always picked # 7 when they could! Kids are so funny. You think they’re so big because they act like they know everything and then, one day, your 17 year old puts an open jar of spaghetti sauce back in the cupboard. Well, at least he put it away!

  4. tammy says:

Thanks for the pics I have been waiting to see the boys in action. How did they do

    How is HS Football

We beat Merdian Sun 8-0. It was a great game.

  5. Bobbi Janay says:

    Looks like they are having.

  6. Lilly says:

Tackle! Wow, no 7 is really flying in that first photo. And I like your turn ‘bobbleheads.’ That’s just what they look like.

  7. Connie F-G says:

We tied soccer shoes for that very reason until she quit playing her 6th grade spring. There are times she’ll still ask us to do her shoes for her if she needs them just perfect. AHHH so nice to be needed by a know-it-all 13 year old girl!

I love the picture of the little guys and their coach. Puts it into perspective.

    Hugs!
    Connie

  8. Victoria says:

    It’s the best number! :)

  9. Elizabeth_K says:

I love that he just thought his coach was interested in knowing HIM better. Very cute.

  10. Kirsten says:

the 8 year olds are adorable!

I love reading the banter between you and your kids. it’s just hilarious! I’m sure you save the best moments for us, but still, those little snippets have to make the whole day better!

  11. Kristie says:

I’m envious that your sons have games during the day (at least sometimes ….) My son is playing for the first time this year and every single one of his games is at 8pm (on school nights, too … what’s up with that??) No matter how much I fiddle with my camera settings, there just isn’t enough light that late at night to get really good pictures. And when my son caught his first touchdown pass of the season, the referee stepped right in front of me and my camera …….. (sigh) ……blurry, underexposed, and not even the right person.

  12. elizabethk says:

Ah, to always approach life (and people) with his perspective. Innocence and the thought that everyone just wants to get to know ya, chat…! 7’s a good number :D

(and funny you write of numbers, for as I was opening the window to read (bigger as I refuse to even think of bifocals) I thought, cool, she’s posting on 09/09/09! Just to do so! - you know, because it’s a special number day…so I am told.)

  13. Heather's Garden says:

My husband even laughed at the number conversation.

  14. Julie says:

    Texas football nothin’ better!
Now, have you figured out where your nearest emergency clinic is? I ask because we had to go for x-rays and our season hasn’t started yet. Wasn’t broken but he’s wearing a splint for 2 wks. Hopefully the cool weather is around the corner. Great pictures.

  15. Erin Christine says:

I love this. Did he originally tell his coach his (”favorite”) number was a really large one, aka one that could not possibly fit on a jersey? How cool that he is 7 - sounds like a good number for your family:-)

  16. Amy says:

Whoa, was 7 the number of times he sacked the quarterback? He looks like quite the play maker.

  17. Lynn Craig says:

Great shots! Love the blond moment.

I think kids do ask each other questions off the wall just to get to know each other - what’s your favorite food, how many brothers and sister etc….sometimes going on and on….

  18. Keyona says:

Hm…7 is my number too! They do still look so little.

Hope you are adjusting to your new schedule! :o)

  19. Lynn says:

My two younger kids always picked 8 because that was the number they were always assigned to at school. Ha! In fourth grade my daughter was very, very upset because her teacher gave kid’s numbers according to their first name, instead of their last name.

My oldest always picked #1, for obvious reasons.

  20. Katie in MA says:

Don’t you miss when life was so simple and happy?

  21. Stacy says:

My son chose #9 because he was 9 years old?!? He’s still playing with #9 even at age 11. Little boys minds are very funny!

  22. Amy says:

They are SO darn cute. I know that’s not what they’re going for here, but I can’t help myself. My husband is a high school coach - our son is 9, but we don’t have football here till 7th grade. So seeing your boys “bobblehead” around is hilariously cute.

  23. Elizabeth says:

That’s John Elway’s number in Bronco country. My son is always #1 because he is the smallest, and the only size small jersey is always numbered 1.
