What a Difference a Few Years Makes
October 14, 2009
Remember this? It still makes me laugh.
Fast forward almost three years…
Miles announced this afternoon that “our kids” would really like brownies when they came home from school. He says it so earnestly that it is impossible to say no. He also waits until I am on the phone to ask me these things and I am all, “Sure whatever you want! A pony? Why the hell not! We will go in one minute and pick out one. Okay, two!”
I did, however, draw the line at running out to the store to buy sprinkles for the top of the brownies even though “our kids” would really, really love sprinkles. I can’t be a total pushover all the time.
Also, I thought the ponies would get restless waiting in the car.
I am still trying to recover from flying the red eye home Sunday night. Apparently I am a delicate flower who can no longer pull all-nighters. I want to write about the great weekend I had with some amazing and fun women, but all I can think about right now is propping my eyes open.

My favorite is the kids’ voices in the background (egging him on–ha ha) especially the “you’re allowing this?!” very cute!
October 14th, 2009 at 4:48 pmNow the 2yo is singing mom, mom, mom more food. He has a groupie if he likes younger women.
October 14th, 2009 at 6:15 pmOne small step towards independence……..
now if you can just get him making a whole meal!
Hey Don’t laugh my son could do it at 12 years old :0) of course the kitchen was trashed and it was twice as much work than if I just did it myself, but it did wonders for his self confidence.
You are gonna miss Miles next year when he is in school
October 14th, 2009 at 8:26 pmaren’t ya?
A few years just makes that first video even funnier. Truly.
October 14th, 2009 at 9:01 pmmust be a last kid thing: making requests in the form of “suggestions”/statements! So funny (pretty effective too!)
October 14th, 2009 at 9:22 pmno wonder they say the youngest of the family make great salesmen! MY #8 is a PRO!
First of all - how cute is it that he refers to the sibs as “our kids”?!?! And how good of you to just enjoy the moment - letting him crack soooo many eggs. I must make a mental note. He was pretty darn good way back then!
October 14th, 2009 at 9:54 pmOh bless him!
October 15th, 2009 at 6:23 amVery cute… “our kids”, love it!!!!!
October 15th, 2009 at 6:33 amHee. Mine will sometimes crack eggs, but sometimes decides she doesn’t want to deal with the potential ick of raw egg white touching her fingers. Probably depends on how hungry she is for those cookies!
October 15th, 2009 at 7:11 amThis is so cute. He is so very gentle when tapping the eggs to get them to crack - and so intent on what he is doing. Love that he views his brothers and sister as “our kids”.
You really are the *fun* parent, letting him crack all those eggs in the first video - and the indignation in the others’ voices that you would allow him to do it!
October 15th, 2009 at 8:18 amWow! What a difference! My little one loves to crack eggs, too.
October 15th, 2009 at 8:42 amI had not seen the first clip it was sooooooooooo
cute. He has talent
Hope you recover soon we are all dying to hear about your trip
October 15th, 2009 at 10:41 amThis is one of my absolute favorite videos you have ever posted. So glad to see a follow up. You have no idea how it relieves me to know you haven’t let his egg cracking skills atrophy. He is so darn cute, let him know another pony is on the way from me.
October 15th, 2009 at 10:59 amJust hope it doesn’t get lost in the mail.
It’s amazing how generous they get when there’s a payoff for them as well. My kids are all, “Let’s make cupcakes for Daddy, Mommy!” For Daddy. Sure. I think the last time Daddy ate a cupcake was during the Regan administration. But nice thought, guys.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:14 amAlso? You are probably still hung over from all of that fabulous wine! That is hilarious with Miles being all “our kids would really love…” with everything. Know what would be a great post? (You know…after you blog about the hilarity and adventures from this weekend.) You should write down (one of) your favorite memories from each of the kids’ early childhoods. I can think of several of my favorite Miles Moments.
October 15th, 2009 at 1:23 pmI love that he calls his big siblings “our kids.”
October 15th, 2009 at 1:31 pmWow, he did a great job cracking that egg and he sounds so cute and pleased that he did it. I remember the other egg cracking video and it is still hilarious. Especially Miles adding to the pile of egg shells.
October 15th, 2009 at 9:03 pmI”ve always thought he was cute - that earlier video makes him even cuter. He does a really good job on the eggs - that kind of eye hand coordination is very impressive. Just one question - do you sit on the counter to cook much? He is always on the counter! Very funny!
October 16th, 2009 at 8:28 amI’d almost forgotten about that first video! Whoa! He’s gotten so BIG!
October 16th, 2009 at 2:35 pmHi Chris,
I so remember that first video, where have those years gone? I can’t believe he is growing up so fast.
He is still good at cracking those eggs, I absolutely love that you involve the kids in the daily activities around the house and garden and in the kitchen. I really do believe it gives them a lot more realistic grounding of life in general. Making things fun in the way that you do, makes what could be boring into something exciting and fun to do. GOOD ONE.
I continue to believe that you are a totally amazing Mother GOOD JOB.
In the next week or so I will sit down and write you an e-mail Chris, in the meantime, take care.
Lots of Love to you ALL and a BIG SQUEEZE for young Miles.

Has it really been that long? I remember the first video. Very Clearly. It inspired a certain little person in my household to do the same thing. With 15 doz eggs. At 5am. Before God himself was up. It took over 10lbs of salt to clean up that mess!
