  1. Lucy says:

I get an umbrella and wear my rain boots and sometimes I turn my face up to the rain and breathe in!

  2. Larissa says:

I love this! And I really love those great flip-flop tan lines that you and your daughter have. I live in Chicago and I only have pale versions of those for about 2 months!!

BTW, I heard a joke the other day that made me think of when people ask you those annoying questions about whether all of the kids are yours. When a father of six is asked if they are all his he responds “no, I work for a condom company and these are the complaints”

    Have a nice day.

  3. Sherry says:

    Ringworm! Broken Glass! Ack!

Kidding. I’m usually the one out splashing barefoot in the puddles around here. I think the neighbors are just waiting to have my husband put me in “A Home”.

  4. Johnna says:

Looks like Oct 27th! Loved this post.

  5. Jenny says:

I dropped my two year old off this morning at her babysitter in a drizzling rain. All I could think was, “Ugh, indoor recess with my first grade class.” As soon as we got out of the car, my daughter said, “We’ll get to jump in puddles today!” It was a reminder I needed.

  6. Brittany says:

I’m 22 and playing in the rain is still one of my favorite things to do. It’s so hard to pass by a puddle and not jump in.

  7. Allyson/@HBMomof2 says:

We hunker down and snuggle and jump in the aftermath of puddles. I love that the answer is a metaphor for our lives.

  8. Blake says:

I bet you guys miss the cold, gray, rainy days we are having right now and all that follows! I’m just wishing it were warm enough in my house to take off my fuzzy, warm socks!

  9. tammy says:

    Take pictures love it

  10. Keyona says:

You have to be the world’s coolest mom. You know, besides me.

  11. Katie in MA says:

I, for one, celebrate that I get out of mowing the grass for one more week (hooray!) and use the kiddie pool as a rain gauge. That justifies not putting the pool away yet, right? I *know* it justifies not getting out of our pajamas for a whole day.

  12. Mara says:

You celebrate! Especially where you are, where the rain has been scarce of late. I love a rainy day, myself, but all the more so during a drought…

  13. alex says:

totally loved those days when I was a kid….glad your a cool mom and let your kids play in the rain..and as for any stuff people are gonna say…it’s their childhood. Let them have it! Your a rockin’ mom if I ever knew one ( even though I just read your blog :) )

  14. reen says:

Innit great to have some here finally?? Too bad our neighborhood’s streets are nowhere near that clean (I’m talking brown guk, gag colored muck water) or we would have taken the same tack. :) Muy cute photos!

  15. poppy fields says:

    Look for rainbows.

  16. Carolynn from Western Australia says:

    Wow Chris,
I’ll bet the kids had fun floating paper boats down the rivers running along those gutters.

Now all your gardens will have a chance to green up again during these cooler months. You’ll have to describe the cooler months there in Austin as you go through them and compare them to those you had at The Big Yellow House. Won’t you miss those lovely cuddly Brown Bears being able to pop by for a visit this winter. :-)

Did you enjoy the Turkey Cooking this year. How different was the Turkey cooked in a Convection Oven in comparisson to one cooked in a Normal Gas Oven ? I have to plead a little ignorant here, though, how does a Convection Oven operate, is it quicker than an ordinary Oven, and is it anything like a Microwave Oven.

What Date is Thanksgiving, and do you also have a Turkey Dinner on Christmas Day.?

Take Care and keep all those enjoyable stories coming. I can’t believe how much all your children are growing up, and you NEVER seem to age at all yourself, infact if anything you seem to be looking younger, is Rob againg along with the kids or is he also getting younger with yourself.

Lots of Love Carolynn XXXXX :-) BIG HUGS to Miles and anyone else who feels they are not too old for one.

Chris says: I believe the only difference with a convection oven compared to a regular oven is that a convection oven has a fan to circulate the heat evenly. So it cooks faster and also more evenly.

  17. peepnroosmom says:

So it’s raining in Texas? I feel like it has been raining here in Ga. for the last six weeks. We haven’t seen the blue sky but for only a day at at time since September. Everything is getting mildew-y.

  18. Dawn says:

HA! Not that around here. It’s freezing.

Thanks for showing me pictures of warm. I may have to come back to them a few times between now and May to remind myself that bare feet in water outside is still possible sometimes.

  19. Cara says:

I have the best memories of playing in the rain as a child. These lovely photos brought them all flooding back.

  20. Chels says:

awww wow, so much rain to play in :) i love these photos… gorgeous!

  21. Victoria says:

    A MEN!

  22. angie says:

Must be nice to have warm rain. Just one day here, I tell you. . . but you know all about the frozen north.

  23. melissa from girlymama says:

love your jeans with pink toes! you’re my kind-a girl!

  24. Jill VT says:

Hope fervently the rain is watering your nascent garden; hope even more that the sunlight is right around the corner.

  25. Ashley says:

I love that you and your daughter have matching toenail polish!

Also, that you have such a positive outlook on life. You are teaching your children an invaluable lesson when you let them play in the rain - it sounds silly but it is true.

  26. Melanie says:

Welcome to the south. Lots of rain.

  27. Maddy says:

I love those storms that come after a long hot day, the kids look like they enjoyed it too.

  28. diane says:

Thank you for sharing your wonderful pictures and stories. Such talent!
I look forward to your posts.
    Have a great day!

  29. Salsaqueen says:

As a little girl who never grew up… I STILL splash in the rain puddles along the esge of the street!

  30. Tree says:

Am I the only one jealous that I would not see my jean zipper if I took a pix from the same angle as your last one? I sooooo wish you were my neighbor!

  31. Snapper says:

We go puddling, just like y’all did. ;)

  32. PamS says:

Grab the kids and the camera that is what!

  33. Elizabeth says:

Hrmph. 18 inches of snow here in Denver today/tomorrow. Playing in the snow is fun, too, when it is soft and fluffy, but we got hail in the middle of the night, too, so I think it will be the gritty icy kind. At least it’s supposed to all melt away and be nice by Halloween.

  34. Veronica says:

Gotta love bare feet in October. My kids love floating paper boats down the street in the rain too. So THAT’s what a flat stomach looks like from above. Nice!

  35. Caitlyn Nicholas says:

Love your message in this. I just forwarded the link to a dear friend who is having a really hard time atm. Thanks for a great blog.

    Cait :)

  36. kooky says:

    it could be snoowwwww…no??

    Chris says: ACK. NO snow!!!

  37. Kathleen says:

I think I would like some warm rain…my kids love to dance in the rain in the summer…all we’ve had here lately is the 42 degree constant drizzle…which is unpleasant.

  38. Ann-Marie says:

I so wish I could be barefoot in the rain in October, but Chicago doesn’t really allow for that. And I love the pink toenails! Enjoy!

  39. Brandi says:

I love storms. I love to sit out on my porch and watch all the lightening, and feel the mist on my face from the wind whipping around the spray from the raindrops hitting the ground. When it is daytime I send my toddlers outside to play in it. We try to catch raindrops on our tongues, and laugh when it lands in our eyes. DH flips out, and I get disapproving looks from all the neighbors, because now their kids will want to come splash in the rain, too.

But not a single one of my children is the least bit afraid of lightening or thunder. Nor do they worry about getting a little wet, or letting a little rain stop then from doing something fun like sliding down a rain soaked slide.

  40. Mrs. Pickles says:

The storm came up so very quick
    it couldn’t have been quicker.
I should have brought my hat along,
I should have brought my slicker.
My hair is wet, my feet are wet,
    I couldn’t be much wetter.
I fell into a river once,
    but this is even better!
(”Spring Rain” by Marchette Chute, my girls’ all-time favorite poem — I feel so mean on cold days when I don’t let them go splash in puddles)
