This one…
November 17, 2009
This one turns NINE years old today.
More than my oldest turning fifteen, this son turning nine blows my mind, breaks my heart, and all those other cliches about time passing much too quickly.
Birthday post to follow at some point.
(I wrote about the story behind the photo here last year.)
Oh, and if you are just itching to read something new I have a post up over at Butterball about hosting an allergen-free Thanksgiving. Tasty ideas that won’t kill your loved ones! Win-win!

I understand that it was NOT FUNNY that you had to rush him to the hospital like that, and seriously ill children are NOT FUNNY.
But that fact that his face still shows the same intense expression in pictures…that IS funny.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:54 amOh, Goodness. I’m pregnant with my first and I seriously should not have gone back and read that story again.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:25 pmHe does look serious…and sweet. Thank goodness he’s here. Happy Birthday, This One!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:58 pmBut for the grace of God. It’s one hell of a way to learn not to sweat the small stuff, isn’t it?! Happy Birthday to 9-year-old and many, many more!!
November 17th, 2009 at 1:29 pmYou were blessed to wake up that night so long ago. What a beautiful baby and what a beautiful boy now. Happy Birthday nine yr old son!
November 17th, 2009 at 2:05 pmAwww, My little princess (2nd of 4 kids) turns nine today also. It’s killing me because I look at her and feel like she was just a wee little thing and then I blinked and she has gone all tween on me!
November 17th, 2009 at 2:26 pmToday is my first-born daughter’s 16th birthday. She is everything that I wished I was when I was 16 — smart, funny, friendly, well-liked, feisty, beautiful. Happy birthday to yours and mine!
November 17th, 2009 at 3:10 pmDid you ever find out what happened to him that caused that episode? My 4 year old just had a similar episode last month out of the blue and it was a Croup virus. (He also already has severe asthma.) Very very scary. My husband and I thought we were going to lose him, and it was one of the worst nights of our lives. Thankfully, it turned out well for you and for us.
Amazing how your nine-year-old looks the same now as he did then. He’s a handsome boy like his brothers.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:03 pmI had not started reading your post when you first posted this. the picture was of the resivoir yes????

November 17th, 2009 at 7:05 pmSuch a cutie. I know what you mean, everything can change in the blink of an eye. Literally. The kids won’t get it until they have kids of their own.
November 17th, 2009 at 7:10 pmI will have my kleenex ready to read your post about this child’s birthday. You always write such beautiful birthday messages! Thank you for commenting how old you were when you had your oldest son. I think in between telling us how to cook a turkey you could also tell us how to stay so young looking even now!
November 17th, 2009 at 8:24 pmI can only imagine how scary that must have been! I’m glad everything turned out alright.
I hope you post a new photo of him, as I get confused easily on who is who, what with their ages changing annually
hehe
November 17th, 2009 at 8:25 pmI agree with Ani. The fact that your son has that very same expression nine years later is hilarious! I recognized which child he was before learning of his birthday. Happy Birthday, kiddo.
November 17th, 2009 at 8:55 pmChris, I must say that I am becoming a hater when looking at your pics. You have NOT AGED ONE BIT! Unfortunately I cannot same the same (lol)
As to the other, I too stand over my offspring (11 and 7) to make sure they are breathing.
Happy Birthday 9 y/o!
November 18th, 2009 at 6:54 amYes, very distinct expression he (still) has! What a night that must have been for you - I can’t even imagine. Happy, happy birthday, Nine Year Old Son…and many more!
November 18th, 2009 at 2:30 pm9 year old shares a birthday with my oldest son! Hope a lovely day was had by all!
November 18th, 2009 at 6:56 pmWow, he has the exact same face 9 years later!! That is so funny. He’s an adorable kid. Happy Birthday to Mr. Serious!!
November 18th, 2009 at 7:56 pmWow, just read your post from last year. Can relate! It was the year 2000 for me too…on my daughter’s second day of life she was completely limp and I couldn’t wake her up. (I was totally panicked because I had had a brother die of SIDS when I was young and had this nagging fear: “What if one day my baby doesn’t wake up?”) Anyway, we were in the PICU for 4 days, spinal tap, major poking & prodding, etc. In the end, turns out she was just dehydrated and she’s perfectly healthy now but OH. MY. GOSH.
Congratulations on 9 years of life on your end too!
November 18th, 2009 at 9:52 pmWhat a sweet tiny baby! I feel bad that he was sick, but I have to say I knew exactly which kid he was before I read it.
November 19th, 2009 at 12:28 amHe looks the exact same!
He is precious. It is a night you will never forget, I know well - having been through something similar when mine was 3 months old. Truly gives one a different perspective on the important things. Isn’t it amazing how the personality is so unique and distinct even at that tender age? Happiest Birthday to both your boys this month!!
November 19th, 2009 at 11:33 amJust came across your blog and I think it is too funny. Your kids are beautiful. I can barely handle one! I have no idea how you do it!!
November 20th, 2009 at 12:40 amI always recognize this child of yours by that serious facial expression. Mine has the same expression in nearly all the pics we’ve ever taken; I’ve got a soft spot now for little boys like this. (Isn’t this the same son who has cried angry tears during the New Year’s Eve charades because his family is just too frustratingly stupid to guess what he’s acting out?)
November 20th, 2009 at 6:41 amThank-you. I enjoyed your butterball post. This is my first gluten free thanksgiving, since my daughter was diagnosed with celiac. Last week I held a 60th anniversary dinner for my inlaws and 30 people, one with celiac, 1 allergic to soy, eggs, peanuts, and one allergic to dairy. It was a challenge but not impossible.
November 21st, 2009 at 11:16 pmI love the look on his face, it just seems so, “Alright already, sweets. I’m OK now. Let’s just get this over with and go home.” I’m glad everything was and is OK. This type of thing is something I’m glad I don’t have to worry so much about anymore (my kids are 9,7, and 4…though there’s plenty of other worries now!) but I remember. Although my 4 yo does still get a croupy cough, so these types of worries aren’t yet completely behind me.
November 22nd, 2009 at 12:52 amAs a mother who lost a baby, I know why you’re so blown away by this one turning 9. Congratulations to you both. You done good. Real good.
November 22nd, 2009 at 2:31 pmI hope you are OK. I worry about the crazy neighbors when you don’t post.
November 23rd, 2009 at 8:17 pmShares a birthday with my youngest sister
I am pretty sure I know which son this one is, from that facial expression…boy, you must surely have your hands full! Lots of blessings, you are a lucky lady!
November 24th, 2009 at 1:30 pmwhy are his hands bandaged up?
Chris says: To keep the ivs in place.
