Snow, Texas Style
February 23, 2010
The scene driving my 7th and 8th graders to school. Heated debate between them and their friend over whether this is actually considered snow. My kids say it is sleet. Their friend says that if it is white and falls from the sky, it is snow. I settle the debate and say it is snow, texas style.
I am somewhat surprised that there even is school today. One of my neighbors who is from California and has never in her life had to deal with snow before called me this morning.
Chris? What are we supposed to do?
Just try to stay alive.
I feel like you are probably kidding.
Note the lack of winter gear. Pajamas, rain boots, and a hat.
A snow ball.
Miles looks at the snowball he just threw on the ground.
Well, that was fun. Let’s go back inside now.
And so we did.
I, however, refrained from jumping on the couch.
My highschool son texted me that they are all outside playing in the snow. And I wonder about my little kids who were scheduled to take practice TAKS tests all day today. I hope they get to go outside and enjoy the snow for at least a little bit.

At least with snow, texas style there is alot less shoveling!!!
February 23rd, 2010 at 12:43 pmI totally get it. Moved from Chicago to South Carolina 6 years ago. In Chicago, that is sleet. In South Carolina, that is cause for school to be closed!
February 23rd, 2010 at 12:45 pmIs there anything better than kids playing in snow? Even Texas snow!
February 23rd, 2010 at 12:55 pmThank you for reminding that there is at least one thing I don’t miss about Texas at all. Good riddance, TAKS tests.
February 23rd, 2010 at 12:57 pmLOL… I was kinda hoping for a hint of Ice cause I knew that would mean a day off of work. But nope.. I know its silly but thats just how it works down here
February 23rd, 2010 at 1:01 pmI live in the Houston area, where we received about enough snow to leave a footprint this year. My boys wore socks on their hands for gloves to make “snowballs”. Texans talk a big game with tornadoes and hurricanes and smoldering hot summers, but we are big fat wimps with any winter precipitation. This is my first time to comment. I love your blog.
February 23rd, 2010 at 1:19 pmI love, love, love the picture of Miles jumping on the couch. It looks like he is conducting the “snow”…
February 23rd, 2010 at 1:42 pmMiles looks too cute out there in his jammies along with his hat and rubber boots. Glad he and your oldest were able to play in it for a bit. Just enough snow to play with and not enough to get stranded.
February 23rd, 2010 at 1:43 pmwell now we know Miles at least has matching pjs when he goes to school and its PJ day!
February 23rd, 2010 at 2:02 pmSnow Texas style sure isn’t snow Conneticut style…but at least it was a slice of your old CT weather right when you missing “home”.
February 23rd, 2010 at 2:15 pmYes. Snow Texas style. I really like that. Because if you wait for real snow in Texas south of Lubbuck, it will never come.
February 23rd, 2010 at 2:19 pmWell, at least he had a hat on right? And those boots look waterproof… so call it ’snow gear - Texas style’.
February 23rd, 2010 at 2:22 pmWhere I grew up in Minnesota the weatherman called the combination of snow and drizzle “snizzle”. Maybe that’s what is going on in Texas…enjoy it!
February 23rd, 2010 at 2:25 pmI hope they got to enjoy the snow! It’s such a rare occurrence in TX (although I’m with the kids - it’s not REAL snow).
February 23rd, 2010 at 2:43 pmMiles is still one of the cutest kids ever.
February 23rd, 2010 at 3:02 pmI grew up in Austin and in Dallas. The one time I remember getting snow in Dallas my little sister and I eagerly made a snowman. It was pathetic, with sticks and grass sticking out of its 3 foot body. We were so proud.
February 23rd, 2010 at 3:35 pmI have always loved your blog, your writing is beautiful and inspiring with having had grown up with three brothers and being the only girl, I defiantly feel like I can relate to your stories in some sense with your daughter. Im only 21 but your enteries always entertain me…:) keep writing and most of all keep keeping us entertained!!
Miles, is beautifully adorable.but then again so are all of your children.
February 23rd, 2010 at 4:29 pmProbably not — they take TAKS pretty seriously around here. It gets a little crazy actually. I hate standardized tests!
February 23rd, 2010 at 4:30 pmThis looks like a scene from your home with a “sole”. You have the best of both
February 23rd, 2010 at 4:50 pmI’m in Austin and it sure has been snowing at our house today!I took my kids out early so they can play in it. Who knows if/when it will snow like this around here during their childhood again - they’re so excited!
February 23rd, 2010 at 4:59 pmamazing pictures. we got our first snowfall this winter a few weeks ago here in SC. it was about 3 inches and melted the next day, but we played in it for as long as we could. no snow gear in our house, so i put plastic bags over my son’s shoes. take care.
February 23rd, 2010 at 4:59 pmMiles and maybe your daughter probably won’t remember growing up in the frozen tundra that was your previous home. What a different life they will remember, weather-wise!
Having grown up in Houston, I have a deep appreciation for snow and seasons (altho this winter has been too much, even for me!) At least in Austin you get some semblance of seasons changing!
February 23rd, 2010 at 5:03 pmSnow Texas style looks a lot like snow Irish style! And yes, our school closes for not a lot more than that. Hope they enjoy it.
February 23rd, 2010 at 5:17 pmIt’s just gonna be rain by the time it gets here
February 23rd, 2010 at 5:30 pmI think I prefer snow, TEXAS style.
Here in South Dakota it looks like the clouds fell to the ground and froze there.
Love the jumping on the couch pic!
February 23rd, 2010 at 6:37 pmIt “snowed” once here in San Diego when I was in high school. It must have lasted all of 30 minutes and we all went crazy. Give me hot weather any day! I don’t know how all my Scandinavian ancestors survived and I’m glad my parents left North Dakota. (By the way, they loved living in Austin before they got here.)
February 23rd, 2010 at 7:03 pmyou may miss the old house -
but can you honestly say you miss the SNOW of the Great Northeast?
Huh? Huh? Can you?
February 23rd, 2010 at 7:38 pmAwwww so cute. I’m just proud of you he had proper pajamas on. (haha)
February 23rd, 2010 at 8:24 pmI am a Floridian that now lives outside of Cincy and I am like the Texans:) All wide eyed at it but I will say that I am OVER it. I bet your kids laugh at that ’sleet.’ LOL.
February 23rd, 2010 at 9:00 pmI hope so too!
February 23rd, 2010 at 10:23 pmOk, it is just wrong that the kids don’t even need a darn hoodie or a fleece vest or something to play in the snow. We haven’t taken off our industrial-strength five-ton snowboots in two weeks. Snow, Texas-style is the sort of precip i could get behind.
February 23rd, 2010 at 11:15 pmTexas snow looks very similar to Mississippi snow! Love the picture of your little one jumping on the couch
Isn’t that what it’s all about?
February 24th, 2010 at 12:47 amArgh, sitting here in 107 F weather wishing I was you!
February 24th, 2010 at 5:21 amDoesn’t that reaction to the snow just crack you up? My family moved from Buffalo, NY to Indiana when I was 8. Granted, both areas had lake snow, but the people in IN freaked out — my parents were always wondering what the big deal was.
Enjoy your “snow.”
February 24th, 2010 at 8:16 amYou take the most amazing pictures, Chris. Wish I could send some of this Wisconsin snow down your way!! (for old time’s sake)
February 24th, 2010 at 9:57 amAh how nice. I would love some Texas snow. Here in California we were bracing for Storm Watch 2010 this weekend. They even cancelled T-Ball practice for Monday. I think I did see a cloud roll by at about noon yesterday. Or maybe it was just a large bird casting a shadow, I’m not sure. At least the kids there have an easier time learning about winter. They try to explain the seasons here in school and the kids just look blank. They just can’t get the concept. So, once a year we take a six hour drive to see snow. Good times.
February 24th, 2010 at 11:13 amI love Snow, Texas Style, however I am VERY tired of SNOW NORTH DAKOTA style. Sorry to shout, but it conveys my feelings on the issue… = ) Love your baseball pics, but am very jealous. Baseball won’t start here until June 1. If we’re lucky, the snow will be gone by then.
February 24th, 2010 at 11:26 amHere in Minnesota, we call that a heavy frost.
February 24th, 2010 at 12:21 pmI live in Morocco, and my son (12) is on vacation with friends to go camping in the desert. He called me to say there was snow by the side of the road as they drove through the Atlas Mountains, so they stopped and played in it. He took tons of pics, he told me, and then accidentally deleted them all. Poor kid!
February 24th, 2010 at 2:38 pmWannit FUN?! My kids’ schools did let them out to play in it, that made me happy.
Love the pajamas and rain boots!
February 24th, 2010 at 3:11 pmI lived in West Texas for 10 years- the phrase TX snow is definitely descriptive. Does it rain mud in your area? That was always a treat:)
Btw, you’ve made me laugh for years. Thanks.
February 27th, 2010 at 3:24 pmhey - what are ” taks” tests - (question mark key MISSING - thanks kids! youre sooo funny!) are the the texas state tests or something
February 28th, 2010 at 3:40 amdo you miss homeschooling < insert ANOTHER question mark here ! thanks kids
hmmm just re read that, rather pathetic comment. lets review , shall we
what are “taks” tests, sound stink-o, whatever they are
kids hid ( Oh ! the un we have around HERE, just CRAZY) my question mark key. now they cant remember where they put it.
February 28th, 2010 at 3:44 amI think I will hide the legos. do you think they will get the irony. mmm. probably not.
