Forever Saddled With the Nickname ‘The Baby’

March 23, 2010

How many of you have been reading long enought to remember this video from when Miles was 1 yr old?

(insert the required bit about how big my BABY has grown, where did the time go, how is it possible ,oh my heart, how I weep for those snap crotch onesies, etc etc etc. Also, wow I was one of those mothers who let their kid outside in the front yard in a diaper and undershirt. KLASSY. )

What a difference four years makes. Not the least of which is that hecan now put his own balls on the tee.

I was sitting across the yard from him earlier when he was hitting the ball and one hit me right in the face. I was so totally not expecting it to go that fast and furious. Now I sit behind him.

  2. Erin Christine says:

    I remember, I remember!!!

Truly can’t believe 4 years has gone by. He just keeps getting cuter and cuter! :-)

  3. kdiddy says:

My son is 8 and is still generally referred to as “the baby.”

  4. Lisa says:

I totally remember that first video! He’s as sweet now as ever.

  5. Caren says:

I remember that first video! What a difference :)

  6. Barb says:

Yes, I have been reading that long (wow). What a cutie pie. Love his stance…and how he says “okay, if you say so” when you tell him to hit another one.

  7. Dani says:

I cannot believe that he is that big…or that I’ve been following your blog for that long. I remember making my hubby come watch that video because he was so darn cute. Oh, what a gorgeous guy he’s growing in to. Unfortunately this means that my guy is also growing up.
I miss the chubby legs and the baby laughs.

  8. ema says:

i’m so sorry chris, i laughed - as a mother who has been on the receiving end myself i shouldn’t have, i’m so sorry! but i have to confess i’m still laughing now…. partly out of my own remembered pain & embarassment!

  9. Mara says:

I’m one of those long-time readers. I remember that video!

  10. Issa says:

OMG I do remember that video. In fact, I believe I remember when you had him. Sheesh. And ever since then I’ve wondered what the rest of your kids names were. Ha.

We still call my five year old, little girl. Because, she was the second girl. Inventive, no? She doesn’t seem to care yet though.

  11. brit says:

me! me! I’ve been here that long. The time…it flies.

  12. Aubri says:

Oh my goodness! I’m one of the readers who have been around since the first time that video was posted… it’s crazy to see how the years have flown. I can’t believe he’s hitting balls into faces now! Hope you’re okay!

  13. Katherine @ Grass Stains says:

I have! It’s been one of my Greatest Internet Joys to watch all of your kids grow up. :) Since my middle son and Miles are so close in age, I’ve enjoyed watching them do all the same things, watched their matching expressions and grieved when their dimpled knuckles went away.

  14. CaliforniaGrammy says:

“Baby Miles” has become quite a slugger! I totally remember the first video and cannot believe how time flies.

  15. Dana says:

I love in the current video how he carefully lines up with a correct batting stance, randomly falls over, then just does a quick sloppy stance and swings at the ball. Captures the desire for perfection and the hurry of youth perfectly!

  16. Kellie says:

I was reading when you posted that video! He has some SERIOUS nerve growing up :)

  17. polli says:

I remember when you posted the first one… and I feel old.

  18. Karen says:

Yes! I have followed long enough to remember this adorable baby post. I also remember the one where he was pitching - loved it too! Thanks for the baseball post.

  19. Amanda says:

He is just as adorable 4 years later… Was he narrating his windup and swing? :-D

  20. Lilly says:

I clearly remember you posting the first video. I watched it many times since Miles was so darned cute and I was impressed with how well he hit the ball at such a tender age. He still is little and he can still really hit a baseball. When does this year’s baseball season start?

  21. Keyona says:

Wow! I do remember that first video. He has grown!

  22. Woman with Kids says:

Just watch where the bat goes… I’m a magnet for flying children’s toys.

  23. Becky says:

Wow, time sure does pass quickly. I didn’t realise I had read your blog so long. I have been reading it since I was a teenager reading over my mom’s shoulder. And now I am married with 2 kids of my own.

Chris says: Wow, now that makes ME feel old!

  24. Christine says:

I remember this! I started reading back when you lived in the Big Yellow House, but I have never left a comment. So here I am, out of lurkdom.

  25. Geneviève says:

actually I have 2 prefered bits in this cute video:
1- the love his bigger brother puts in his ball-preparing-duty
2- the sudden enthusiastic looks when a bus drives by!
    aaah, boys…

(and OMG was he ever a cute little one!!)

  26. Norma says:

    He’s so adorable.

  27. Heather's Garden says:

I have! It may me laugh then and it still does now. He’s got a great swing, his brothers must be proud.

  28. Melanie says:

I remember when you posted this the first time. He is so cute and just gets getting cuter and cuter.

  29. Sharon says:

I remember that video. My youngest is also five and i’ve really been noticing lately that the “babiness” is leaving him and he’s turning into a little boy. Bittersweet.

  30. SoMo says:

Yes, I remember that first video and I feel old.

I know nothing about baseball, but, MAN, he has an arm. I think you are wise to stay out of his way. You are going to be able to go on a great vacation with all that college money you save when your kids get baseball/football/justbecausetheyarecute scholarships.

  31. Lylah says:

I remember that video! Wow. Time really does fly.

  32. owlhaven says:

    I’ve been reading that long!!!

Crazy how fast they grow, isn’t it?

    Mary, mom to 10

  33. Katie O says:

I would be one of those people. Love your writing and all the great photos!

  34. Molly says:

I’ve been reading that long. It was a very cute video!

  35. Nicole says:

Two days ago I was frantically googling to figure out if my 1 year old could have eaten a 2 inch crayon and one of the sights that came up right away was yours, which surprised me at first (since I check your blog nearly every day and had never come across a story about this sort of thing.) But then I realized, it really wasn’t that long ago that you had multiple kids in diapers, ingesting small objects every time you turned your back. You probably have a special category for ‘things I found in a diaper’. I suppose this it just a reminder of reasons to be glad your kids are old enough to set up the t-ball themselves :-)

  36. dee gregory says:

    I remember!

My kidlet asked me to pitch the ball to him. I know, but it was one of those plastic balls with holes in it so I thought I’d be safe. Not. Ended up with broken glasses and a cut above my eye. I never pitched to him again way too dangerous!

  37. mary Novak says:

    meeeeee!!!!

    I remember!!!!!

It’s funny how you don’t really notice the growth in your own children as much as you do in other’s children.

  38. Brigitte says:

Must be those dang aluminum bats!

I remember that video - Miles is a month younger than my daughter, and I think she STILL can’t hit a ball as well as 1-year-old Miles! But I still duck and cover, just in case. ;-)

  39. Michelle says:

I have not been following long enough to see that first video, but OH MY STARS, that little tyke can hit! If you notice the little details, its really a lovely little video: little Miles enjoying baseball, older brother helping him learn how to hold the bat and swing and playing ball boy, laughing child who wants “baseball!” instead of dinner. Delightful.

  40. Ann-Marie says:

I remember the video of the 1-year-old Miles. And I’ve enjoyed reading about him and his siblings ever since. How you capture so much of your life . . . when there’s so much going on all the time . . . is beyond me. I am one in a family of two, and my blog is nearly non-existent. I have a feeling your kids are going to love being able to read some day what you wrote about them and your collective adventures. What a gift!

  41. Pam says:

Way to go Miles! I can remember that video and find it hard to believe it’s been that long ago.

  42. Kate says:

I remember that. He is still so cute.

  43. lucy says:

Wow serious skills! A switch hitter no less!

  44. Peg says:

I absolutely remember the first video and by the way I miss the “Big Yellow House” that wasn’t yellow. My grandson is about the same age as Miles was in the first video and I can relate to the “NO” answer for everything! Your children have a library of their lives to look back on and even if they don’t appreciate it now they will someday. Of course you’ll be in a home drooling and won’t know that! hahaha

  45. Amy says:

I remember this video too! How fast it all goes…
Also? In a house full of girls we refer to my only son as “The Boy”… :)

  46. Annie says:

I remember that video as well…today is my birthday, the youngest of 6, I am 49, and still “the baby”. Yes, he will forever be “the baby”.

  47. Joke says:

Chris - this is my first time commenting, and I have been reading for years and years :) I LOVE this video of Miles, and absolutely remember you posting it :)

  48. Jen says:

    I remember!
And I’m horribly embarrassed to admit that I laughed out loud when you said “now he can put his own balls on the tee.” WICKED MATURE HERE.

  49. Tammy says:

Yep, I remember that first video too. Didn’t realize it had been that long. I love your blog!

  50. peepnroosmom says:

I remember this one! Oh my, he has grown!

  51. PamS says:

How sweet in that first video!
    1) big brother was a really good egg
    2) Miles waited to swing each time until big brother’s head was no longer in the way

you may get those scholarships yet - in the second video he has the correct stance, lean back and swing thing going!

  52. Sue says:

Has it been that long? geez, he got older and I didn’t. And, my kids were allover in their onsies. I even sewed ruffles onto my daughter’s.

  53. Jennifer says:

I remember that video. I must have been reading you for awhile before that too, because it doesn’t seem that long ago. I still remember the night I found your blog. And read half of your archives that night. And the rest the next night. Ha ha! I’ve probably told you this before but yours was the first blog I followed. And the reason I started writing.

  54. Jen says:

Wow has it been that long?! I was blown away the first time I saw your first clip and still am pretty awestruck with his hand-eye coordination now! Thank you for sharing, Chris :)

  55. ~Tammy~ says:

Ha! That’s probably MY Becky above, who used to read over my shoulder. She’s my “Little Girl”, the one girl among six brothers.

How is the 40 before 40 coming along?

I hit the “5-0″ this year. Guess I ought to start a bucket list!
    Love your blog, Chris!

  56. Katie in MA says:

Awwww…I remember baby Miles! That was such a cute post…and still is!

  57. Tracy says:

I remember. Wow I am getting old too!

  58. Deb says:

Love the stance! Love your blog.

  59. Kolimom says:

Yes, I remember that video and your daughter crying when you sang Happy Birthday. When you write those heartfelt birthday messages it makes me feel like I watched them grow up too! Miles is adorable and I loved when you do a video and he is laughing!

  60. jess says:

I was sitting here thinking, “Hey, I remember that. I haven’t been reading this blog that long, have I?” And then I realized that I had my then-fiance watch the cute video, and yes, I’ve been married almost four years now. Wow…

  61. Marci says:

Thanks for the dance down memory lane. Those were the days!

  62. Brittany says:

Yes, I remember too- can’t believe I’ve been reading your blog that long either!

  63. Jandy says:

Yes, I have been reading that long, and then some.

  64. Kathleen says:

Time flies! I remember and have loved watching your family grow up…. thanks for sharing!

  65. Joy H says:

    Damn………time flies.

  66. Shauna says:

My first thought when you said you were hit by the ball was “at least it wasn’t the camera that got hit!”

Thanks for sharing your family with us.
