Forever Saddled With the Nickname ‘The Baby’
March 23, 2010
How many of you have been reading long enought to remember this video from when Miles was 1 yr old?
(insert the required bit about how big my BABY has grown, where did the time go, how is it possible ,oh my heart, how I weep for those snap crotch onesies, etc etc etc. Also, wow I was one of those mothers who let their kid outside in the front yard in a diaper and undershirt. KLASSY. )
What a difference four years makes. Not the least of which is that hecan now put his own balls on the tee.
I was sitting across the yard from him earlier when he was hitting the ball and one hit me right in the face. I was so totally not expecting it to go that fast and furious. Now I sit behind him.

I remember that! Wow, he’s got skills.
March 23rd, 2010 at 4:14 pmI remember, I remember!!!
Truly can’t believe 4 years has gone by. He just keeps getting cuter and cuter!
March 23rd, 2010 at 4:19 pmMy son is 8 and is still generally referred to as “the baby.”
March 23rd, 2010 at 4:43 pmI totally remember that first video! He’s as sweet now as ever.
March 23rd, 2010 at 4:50 pmI remember that first video! What a difference
March 23rd, 2010 at 5:05 pmYes, I have been reading that long (wow). What a cutie pie. Love his stance…and how he says “okay, if you say so” when you tell him to hit another one.
March 23rd, 2010 at 5:05 pmI cannot believe that he is that big…or that I’ve been following your blog for that long. I remember making my hubby come watch that video because he was so darn cute. Oh, what a gorgeous guy he’s growing in to. Unfortunately this means that my guy is also growing up.
March 23rd, 2010 at 5:21 pmI miss the chubby legs and the baby laughs.
i’m so sorry chris, i laughed - as a mother who has been on the receiving end myself i shouldn’t have, i’m so sorry! but i have to confess i’m still laughing now…. partly out of my own remembered pain & embarassment!
March 23rd, 2010 at 5:26 pmI’m one of those long-time readers. I remember that video!
March 23rd, 2010 at 5:35 pmOMG I do remember that video. In fact, I believe I remember when you had him. Sheesh. And ever since then I’ve wondered what the rest of your kids names were. Ha.
We still call my five year old, little girl. Because, she was the second girl. Inventive, no? She doesn’t seem to care yet though.
March 23rd, 2010 at 5:45 pmme! me! I’ve been here that long. The time…it flies.
March 23rd, 2010 at 6:05 pmOh my goodness! I’m one of the readers who have been around since the first time that video was posted… it’s crazy to see how the years have flown. I can’t believe he’s hitting balls into faces now! Hope you’re okay!
March 23rd, 2010 at 6:17 pmI have! It’s been one of my Greatest Internet Joys to watch all of your kids grow up.
Since my middle son and Miles are so close in age, I’ve enjoyed watching them do all the same things, watched their matching expressions and grieved when their dimpled knuckles went away.
March 23rd, 2010 at 6:23 pm“Baby Miles” has become quite a slugger! I totally remember the first video and cannot believe how time flies.
March 23rd, 2010 at 6:26 pmI love in the current video how he carefully lines up with a correct batting stance, randomly falls over, then just does a quick sloppy stance and swings at the ball. Captures the desire for perfection and the hurry of youth perfectly!
March 23rd, 2010 at 6:32 pmI was reading when you posted that video! He has some SERIOUS nerve growing up
March 23rd, 2010 at 6:33 pmI remember when you posted the first one… and I feel old.
March 23rd, 2010 at 6:46 pmYes! I have followed long enough to remember this adorable baby post. I also remember the one where he was pitching - loved it too! Thanks for the baseball post.
March 23rd, 2010 at 6:47 pmHe is just as adorable 4 years later… Was he narrating his windup and swing?
March 23rd, 2010 at 7:10 pmI clearly remember you posting the first video. I watched it many times since Miles was so darned cute and I was impressed with how well he hit the ball at such a tender age. He still is little and he can still really hit a baseball. When does this year’s baseball season start?
March 23rd, 2010 at 7:23 pmWow! I do remember that first video. He has grown!
March 23rd, 2010 at 7:30 pmJust watch where the bat goes… I’m a magnet for flying children’s toys.
March 23rd, 2010 at 7:38 pmWow, time sure does pass quickly. I didn’t realise I had read your blog so long. I have been reading it since I was a teenager reading over my mom’s shoulder. And now I am married with 2 kids of my own.
Chris says: Wow, now that makes ME feel old!
March 23rd, 2010 at 7:53 pmI remember this! I started reading back when you lived in the Big Yellow House, but I have never left a comment. So here I am, out of lurkdom.
March 23rd, 2010 at 8:03 pmactually I have 2 prefered bits in this cute video:
1- the love his bigger brother puts in his ball-preparing-duty
2- the sudden enthusiastic looks when a bus drives by!
aaah, boys…
(and OMG was he ever a cute little one!!)
March 23rd, 2010 at 8:21 pmHe’s so adorable.
March 23rd, 2010 at 8:30 pmI have! It may me laugh then and it still does now. He’s got a great swing, his brothers must be proud.
March 23rd, 2010 at 9:11 pmI remember when you posted this the first time. He is so cute and just gets getting cuter and cuter.
March 23rd, 2010 at 9:39 pmI remember that video. My youngest is also five and i’ve really been noticing lately that the “babiness” is leaving him and he’s turning into a little boy. Bittersweet.
March 23rd, 2010 at 9:51 pmYes, I remember that first video and I feel old.
I know nothing about baseball, but, MAN, he has an arm. I think you are wise to stay out of his way. You are going to be able to go on a great vacation with all that college money you save when your kids get baseball/football/justbecausetheyarecute scholarships.
March 23rd, 2010 at 9:54 pmI remember that video! Wow. Time really does fly.
March 23rd, 2010 at 11:24 pmI’ve been reading that long!!!
Crazy how fast they grow, isn’t it?
Mary, mom to 10
March 23rd, 2010 at 11:32 pmI would be one of those people. Love your writing and all the great photos!
March 24th, 2010 at 2:36 amI’ve been reading that long. It was a very cute video!
March 24th, 2010 at 3:10 amTwo days ago I was frantically googling to figure out if my 1 year old could have eaten a 2 inch crayon and one of the sights that came up right away was yours, which surprised me at first (since I check your blog nearly every day and had never come across a story about this sort of thing.) But then I realized, it really wasn’t that long ago that you had multiple kids in diapers, ingesting small objects every time you turned your back. You probably have a special category for ‘things I found in a diaper’. I suppose this it just a reminder of reasons to be glad your kids are old enough to set up the t-ball themselves
March 24th, 2010 at 3:36 amI remember!
My kidlet asked me to pitch the ball to him. I know, but it was one of those plastic balls with holes in it so I thought I’d be safe. Not. Ended up with broken glasses and a cut above my eye. I never pitched to him again way too dangerous!
March 24th, 2010 at 6:19 ammeeeeee!!!!
I remember!!!!!
It’s funny how you don’t really notice the growth in your own children as much as you do in other’s children.
March 24th, 2010 at 6:30 amMust be those dang aluminum bats!
I remember that video - Miles is a month younger than my daughter, and I think she STILL can’t hit a ball as well as 1-year-old Miles! But I still duck and cover, just in case.
March 24th, 2010 at 7:47 amI have not been following long enough to see that first video, but OH MY STARS, that little tyke can hit! If you notice the little details, its really a lovely little video: little Miles enjoying baseball, older brother helping him learn how to hold the bat and swing and playing ball boy, laughing child who wants “baseball!” instead of dinner. Delightful.
March 24th, 2010 at 8:12 amI remember the video of the 1-year-old Miles. And I’ve enjoyed reading about him and his siblings ever since. How you capture so much of your life . . . when there’s so much going on all the time . . . is beyond me. I am one in a family of two, and my blog is nearly non-existent. I have a feeling your kids are going to love being able to read some day what you wrote about them and your collective adventures. What a gift!
March 24th, 2010 at 8:14 amWay to go Miles! I can remember that video and find it hard to believe it’s been that long ago.
March 24th, 2010 at 8:15 amI remember that. He is still so cute.
March 24th, 2010 at 9:28 amWow serious skills! A switch hitter no less!
March 24th, 2010 at 9:41 amI absolutely remember the first video and by the way I miss the “Big Yellow House” that wasn’t yellow. My grandson is about the same age as Miles was in the first video and I can relate to the “NO” answer for everything! Your children have a library of their lives to look back on and even if they don’t appreciate it now they will someday. Of course you’ll be in a home drooling and won’t know that! hahaha
March 24th, 2010 at 10:04 amI remember this video too! How fast it all goes…
March 24th, 2010 at 10:27 amAlso? In a house full of girls we refer to my only son as “The Boy”…
I remember that video as well…today is my birthday, the youngest of 6, I am 49, and still “the baby”. Yes, he will forever be “the baby”.
March 24th, 2010 at 10:37 amChris - this is my first time commenting, and I have been reading for years and years
I LOVE this video of Miles, and absolutely remember you posting it
March 24th, 2010 at 10:44 amI remember!
March 24th, 2010 at 1:56 pmAnd I’m horribly embarrassed to admit that I laughed out loud when you said “now he can put his own balls on the tee.” WICKED MATURE HERE.
Yep, I remember that first video too. Didn’t realize it had been that long. I love your blog!
March 24th, 2010 at 2:51 pmI remember this one! Oh my, he has grown!
March 24th, 2010 at 3:04 pmHow sweet in that first video!
1) big brother was a really good egg
2) Miles waited to swing each time until big brother’s head was no longer in the way
you may get those scholarships yet - in the second video he has the correct stance, lean back and swing thing going!
March 24th, 2010 at 3:19 pmHas it been that long? geez, he got older and I didn’t. And, my kids were allover in their onsies. I even sewed ruffles onto my daughter’s.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:57 pmI remember that video. I must have been reading you for awhile before that too, because it doesn’t seem that long ago. I still remember the night I found your blog. And read half of your archives that night. And the rest the next night. Ha ha! I’ve probably told you this before but yours was the first blog I followed. And the reason I started writing.
March 25th, 2010 at 6:49 amWow has it been that long?! I was blown away the first time I saw your first clip and still am pretty awestruck with his hand-eye coordination now! Thank you for sharing, Chris
March 25th, 2010 at 9:23 amHa! That’s probably MY Becky above, who used to read over my shoulder. She’s my “Little Girl”, the one girl among six brothers.
How is the 40 before 40 coming along?
I hit the “5-0″ this year. Guess I ought to start a bucket list!
March 25th, 2010 at 12:06 pmLove your blog, Chris!
Awwww…I remember baby Miles! That was such a cute post…and still is!
March 25th, 2010 at 1:43 pmI remember. Wow I am getting old too!
March 25th, 2010 at 2:34 pmLove the stance! Love your blog.
March 25th, 2010 at 5:15 pmYes, I remember that video and your daughter crying when you sang Happy Birthday. When you write those heartfelt birthday messages it makes me feel like I watched them grow up too! Miles is adorable and I loved when you do a video and he is laughing!
March 25th, 2010 at 5:15 pmI was sitting here thinking, “Hey, I remember that. I haven’t been reading this blog that long, have I?” And then I realized that I had my then-fiance watch the cute video, and yes, I’ve been married almost four years now. Wow…
March 25th, 2010 at 6:02 pmThanks for the dance down memory lane. Those were the days!
March 25th, 2010 at 10:12 pmYes, I remember too- can’t believe I’ve been reading your blog that long either!
March 27th, 2010 at 4:44 pmYes, I have been reading that long, and then some.
March 29th, 2010 at 3:23 pmTime flies! I remember and have loved watching your family grow up…. thanks for sharing!
March 29th, 2010 at 6:09 pmDamn………time flies.
March 30th, 2010 at 2:03 amMy first thought when you said you were hit by the ball was “at least it wasn’t the camera that got hit!”
Thanks for sharing your family with us.
