Words You Never Want to Hear
August 14, 2010
Your son has been injured during football practice
One trip the ER later, a broken clavicle is ruled out. He has some sort of AC seperation or something or other. Poor kid. Poor Me. I don’t handle injured kids well. I sort of freak out, mostly in my head, but still.
He arrived home close to midnight last night and proceeded to eat 8 large tacos. At least his appetite is still intact.

Chris, I don’t want to alarm you…. BUT there is a strange MAN sitting at your kitchen table!!! Oh, what? That is your oldest baby? WTH? How did that happen?!
August 14th, 2010 at 2:12 pmSorry your son got hurt. I ALWAYS freak out when my kids get hurt. It is usually never one of my finer moments but at least my kids focus their attention on their crazy wigged out mother versus whatever is bleeding or broken. My husband is the calm one at least on the outside. Hope he gets better soon.
August 14th, 2010 at 3:16 pmOH dear. Wishing him a quick recovery, and you lots of patience. And wine.
August 14th, 2010 at 3:54 pmOh i hope not to ever hear those words!! How long is he out and what does he need to do to get better?
Tell him we said to get well!
at least he is not on a weight control meal plan (remember those days)
August 14th, 2010 at 4:25 pmThank goodness. I remember how much my brother would eat when he was a teen. he would wipe the house out after practice. Maybe the sports and food costs for boys equal the drama and clothes costs for girls? Hope he recovers quickly.
August 14th, 2010 at 5:17 pmThose calls are the worst. I hate even getting them from school. I usually get one a year because my elementary schooler seems to think it’s a good idea to do things like jump from the top of the slide to the ground.
August 14th, 2010 at 5:28 pmSo sorry your son was hurt. My kid’s injuries make me freak out, mostly in my head, too.
August 14th, 2010 at 6:03 pmJust checking, this photo is of your eldest son, right?
Yikes. I had three broken clavicles by the time I was 14 (I was an active and unlucky kid). I don’t know what AC separation is, but it sounds painful. Hope you both heal quickly!
August 14th, 2010 at 6:30 pmMy son broke his left side collar bone at 1. Slipped getting out of the bathtub. Broke the right side collar bone at 6 attending a birthday party. Broke the left side collar bone at 12 in a pick up football game. He goes to football camp last year and breaks the right side in the first game they play. When the coach called to gently tell me that he was injured I wasn’t even concerned and laughed. Turns out that this break was bad. Bone in 3 parts and the detached bone was broken in half. Surgery had to be done and one round plate and 5 screws later he was fixed. He loves his Frankenstein scar. The kid is only 16 and I hope that this is it with breaking his collar bones. LOL
August 14th, 2010 at 6:45 pmOUCH…OUCH… OUCH…
August 14th, 2010 at 7:25 pmOh no. He is too young to have such an injury. I hope he is left handed. He probably doesn’t.
August 14th, 2010 at 7:35 pmOh Chris, I’m so sorry to hear/see this. My husband is the head football coach here, so we know how frustrating these injuries can be. Hope he heals up well and without driving the rest of you crazy!
August 14th, 2010 at 8:07 pmI hope he heals quickly so he can get back to practice and you can stop freaking out.
August 14th, 2010 at 9:38 pmFunny how very little affects that whole appetite thing! Here’s hoping the injury is better soon.
August 14th, 2010 at 11:31 pmOuch! My 14 year old broke his clavicle and had an AC separation from one hard tackle in a soccer scrimmage 4 months ago. He was out of action for about 8-10 weeks, which was so hard for him. Hope your son heals quickly!
August 15th, 2010 at 11:05 amI’m with Elissa - When did he get so big and not boyish? I hope he heals quickly and would say more but my “almost 15yr old, Mom.. geesh” completely boy crazy kid is walking this way and I do not need her saying that your son is hot bc that would just be.. well awkward..
August 15th, 2010 at 9:14 pmHey, I was in the ER last night with a son, too. (Hope he’s on the mend, soon.)
August 15th, 2010 at 11:35 pmWords you never want to hear, ever. Thank God it wasn’t worse. My hubby separated his shoulder many times during his football years, he has big bumps on the top of both shoulders now. I hope your son heals quickly and can get back to what he loves
Great to see he still has his appetite!
August 16th, 2010 at 12:55 amUmmm…as the mom of a football player my heart is with you - but on the bright side I guess be thankful it wasn’t a Joe Theisman injury, I believe in that case I might fly the consolatory wine to Texas myself.
August 16th, 2010 at 3:37 amOuch! Will he have to sit out the season?
August 16th, 2010 at 7:02 amA sprung AC joint, I guess? Sore, very sore, but soft tissue over bone is always good.
Pleased to hear he’ll be ok
August 16th, 2010 at 10:46 amI hope your big guy recovers soon!
August 16th, 2010 at 10:59 amI have a football player too …I love/hate football season.
Sorry for the both of you. Hope he heals quickly. Keep the tacos coming - they are quite therapeutic. Maybe throw in a magic Sonic slush every now and again too.
August 16th, 2010 at 4:52 pmOh the heartbreak!
My son broke bones TWICE in one very critical swim season:

Kids heal quickly, and this is just a few weeks out of the whole athletic journey.
And yes, we really did have his cast removed 10 days early so he could compete in the state swim championship. Psycho, I know.
August 17th, 2010 at 11:36 amIs football season done this year for the eldest?
August 17th, 2010 at 2:44 pmHope he is better soon!
Mine wanted be to stop at Wendy’s after leaving the ER to rule out the soccer induced concussion. It’s testosterone poisoning.
