Time Doesn’t March So Much As It Sprints

This year my 11 yr old will be off to the middle school and Miles is headed to kindergarten.

Last year on the first day of school:

Last night was the long anticipated day where the teachers from the elementary school come by the house to meet the kids in their class.

The entire neighborhood buzzes with excitement. The kids scan each car that drives by like they are on the look-out for celebrities.

Miles kindergarten teacher was the first to arrive. He was thrilled because it was the same teacher that one of his best friends had last year. He showed how thrilled he was by gluing himself to my thigh and acting mute.

My daughter’s teacher arrived next. When she saw her pull up in the car in front of the house she said, “Oh, I like her!” But she too showed this by acting mute. When I prompted her to say something to her teacher she thought for a minute and said, “Thank-you.”

As her teacher walked away, back to her car, my daughter looked at me and asked, “Why did I say thank you? That was weird.”

Her older, always supportive brother, turned to her and said, “Because you are an idiot, that’s why.”

Ahhhh, sibling love. There is nothing quite like it.

The adorable navy blue satin shoes with the bow that she is wearing in the photo? They are wholly unacceptable and after five minute were discarded in favor of flip flops. She only wants to wear Converse sneakers and has given me a list of the colors she needs.

Love the pics! They are so cute! I might be crazy, but in the first picture it looks like there are two sets of slightly different sized twins. They look so much alike!

  2. hennifer says:

Cute tradition with the teachers. I’ve never heard of anything like that before.

While I think her shoes are adorable I am a fan of the Converse myself.

I think the first photo is in the wrong spot? I was confused for a minute at why Miles looked like he’d dipped into the fountain of youth :-)

  3. Amy says:

wonder if the converse thing comes from the influence of brothers??? My daughter is the same way!!! She is an only girl with a pack of brothers and all she wants is Converse. UGH!!

  4. Lisa says:

First, I want to know if the dimples on your boys’ cheeks could get any deeper. They look like you could store a snack in them. :-) Secondly, do all the teachers personally deliver class assignments to your homes? If so, that’s pretty fancy!

  5. Suzie says:

They are all so stinkin’ cute. (And both your blonde-boys have such killer dimples!)

Here’s to a great school year.

  6. shokufeh says:

I thought my MrMan’s school did an awesome job of welcoming kids, but your kids’ school goes above and beyond - house calls to introduce themselves? Awesome!

  7. Anne says:

Ok, I am #6 out of 7 kids. And the rest are boys. No matter what I did, I was the girl and therefore different. I did not fit into my family. I LONGED to wear converse’s and shorts an jeans, like my brothers. But….mom picked out my clothes. Mom made me wear dresses. I didn’t own a pair of pants until I was, like 10, and we moved to some remote mountain top. And even then, no jeans, no sneakers to school. I used to sneak sneakers into my backpack.

I know my mom wanted me to do he total girl thing, but it only served to set me even further apart. Totally sucked.
It kills me to wear a dress or skirt today.

I have 2 boys and a girl now. She wore her brothers hand me downs. Clothes were chosen based on how high you could climb and how fast you could run. Somewhere around grade 3 or 4, dresses were wanted, but last year it was jeans and now, well, its sixth grade and she cares not for running fast or hand me downs. She has a bra, which was one of the most traumatic parenting things I had to do. She likes dresses. She wants accessories, but I vacuum them up so often its now at a point of why bother.

Your daughter might be a ‘tom boy’ now, but its because she needs to be to belong. The girly stuff will come. I mean, really, you ever try to run with flats with bows on them?

  8. lindsay says:

Such a good looking crew….can’t believe how grown up your second youngest son is appearing these days. Miles and your daughter still look like babies to me though!

  9. Caitlyn Nicholas says:

What a bunch of happy healthy kids. You must be so proud of them :)

  10. Kate says:

love that the teachers come to your house!

Love that she gave you a list of colors for her converse :)

  11. Rachel says:

Oh yay! I was hoping you post again about when the teachers go to all their new students’ homes to say hi. I think that is so freaking cool…except that I would have immediately burst into hysterical tears seeing my HORRIBLE NO GOOD VERY BAD 3rd grade teacher emerge from her car in front of my house. I begged and begged my mom to request someone else for me but she refused. And I got the dreaded teacher. Then when my brother was going into 3rd my mom requested a differen teacher for him. Being the oldest, there’s nothing quite as shitty, is there?

  12. Mary Watkins says:

We need green orange and brown this year. No high tops either. I thinkthe real fight will be the removal of the Silly Bandz, they are outlawed at school. Sunday night will sound like a scene from some horror film I’m sure

  13. Ami says:

your daugther and your 9-year-old could be twins and miles and your 11-year-old also really look alike. Beautiful family and the pictures of your daugther are wonderful…i love those shoes. But still I remember me when I was her age…I looked up to my older brother and wanted to wear exactly the same things he did. So I totally understand her present love for sporty shorts and sneakers.

  14. Karate Mom says:

I know you probably hear this all the time, but all of your kids are so gorgeous!!
And I love the ritual of the teachers coming by to meet the kids. What a fun way to do that!

  15. Kirstin says:

Your daughter is so stinkin’ cute- I love the ankle bracelets. Too bad she won’t wear those shoes- I would.

  16. Rachel says:

Your daughter is very cute, especially amongst all those boys! Love the shoes too…

  17. HolyMama! says:

the shoes are darling. how many times have i done that exact same thing…?” WHy did I say thank you? that was weird.” Like, COUNTLESS times, and always right after the mute routine, too. :)

  18. tracey says:

I still can’t believe that your teachers come to your home. That sounds so time-intensive for them! But cool. Hope everyone as a great year!

  19. Robyn says:

It must be a bit strange for you that Miles is finally off to kindergarten …

I love the tradition of the teacher coming by, I wish they did that here!

  20. Kathleen says:

A half day of quiet in your house? What will you do with yourself? Congrats!

  21. S in LA says:

But the dress from last year’s picture is so adorable and girly. And she’s smiling, so she must be happy in it right? How quickly things change. My second grade daughter has long beautiful naturally curly auburn hair that she wants me to cut off. She says she is tired of it. If she could only fast forward herself to age 41 and see what lousy hair she will be left with….

  22. Carol says:

I still chuckle at the thought of your son going to school in the clothes he slept in when he first started school last year ;-)

  23. JEN says:

    Adorable kids.
I’m guessing Miles will be the most popular kid in his class with his good looks and super cute personality.

Your baby is going to school!

  24. tammy says:

I forgot that your teachers made house calls! Still love it

Good luck as you send them all back to school and let us know what you do with all that “free” time

we send the freshman on the 3oth and the rest of the town returns on the 31st. (i cried this morning thinking about sending him to high school i know from expereince that it flys right on by)

  25. Andrea says:

My daughter is 17, almost 18 years old now, and chuck taylors have been her choice of shoe since she was 4. She wore a black pair on her first day of preschool. Back then, I hoped it was a phase. Fourteen years later, and I’ve given up :-)
