Good As New

The good news is that he was able to have the tooth fixed without any major invasive dental work. The dentist slapped some bonding material on there and sculpted him a new tooth. The bad news is that due to the size of the chip and the fact that there is a hairline fracture in the tooth, this will be an ongoing dental issue for the rest of his life.
I endedup kneeling on the floor holding his hand for the most of the hour he was in the chair. It wasn’t the pain that upset him, or even the drilling. He hates the novacaine. While he was laying there in his teary state he said he didn’t want to go to school. And asked if he could please stay home with me.
He could have asked for a flying pony and I would have said yes.
We did some errands. Bought him Subway for lunch, where we ran into one of his teachers who was probably wondering why the hell he wasn’t at school. And about that time, after listening to him talk non-stop for 3 hours, I was wondering the same thing. We came home and he played wii. I have discovered that playing video games is not a quiet activity for this child.
Mom, Mom, Mom…. watch this…
Okay. (A few minutes pass and I look away.)
You missed it! You weren’t looking!
Oh, sorry. (A few more minutes pass and I look away.)
You missed it again. Why aren’t you watching me?
I was watching. How long am I supposed to look at the tv?
The whole time.
Yeah, not happening.
On the bright side, I have discovered that if you want the day to pass really slowly, just invite my loud, bouncy, never-stops-talking nine year old over for the afternoon. By the time the schoolbus brought the other kids home I was sure it was already Friday.
Caverns
October 26, 2010
Yesterday I went on my first school field trip, ever. I wasn’t sure how it was going to be helping to corral a bunch of second graders through the underground cavern.
Turns out I need not have worried. I think maybe kids are better behaved than I remember my class being when I was that age. Or maybe it is the fact that being underground there wasn’t any way for the kids to wander off and so I was able to take photos and enjoy it. Or maybe because I only had two children in my group and I am used to counting to seven over and over again in my head. Two? You don’t even need to count two. You can see ‘em both at the same time.
I never realize how tiny my daughter is until I see her with a large group of her peers. She just had a growth spurt and outgrew a bunch of her clothes. Then I go to her classroom and she comes up to the chin of most the other kids.
After walking a mile or so under ground, we headed back up on the little train. The claustrophobic among us rejoiced. The kids all talking about LUNCH! The most exciting part of the field trip is, apparently, lunch.
Never the Right Worry
October 24, 2010
My 9 and 11 yr old sons both had football games today. Everytime they take the field, I worry. I worry about their legs, their arms, their necks and backs. I worry about their little brains sloshing around inside their skulls. I worry about them knocking out their teeth and breaking their noses. Even though they are padded up with protective gear, I worry.
Today my 9 yr old had a game at 11. He played the way he always does, like a posessed animal. He is aggressive and I wince often. He makes it off the field with limbs completely intact. I breathe a sigh of relief. And pat myself on the back that my worrying has averted yet another crisis.
Then my 11 yr old had a game at 1:00.
My 9 yr old tripped and fell at the stadium where his brother’s game was being played and BROKE HIS FRONT TOOTH IN HALF. A game where he was a spectator.
This is the irony of parenting. You spend countless hours worrying about things that never come to pass. It’s the shit you never think to worry about that gets you.
Day Two
October 21, 2010
I am at Butterball again today! Love these ladies here at the Talk Line.
While I am talking about turkey. And cooking turkey. And eating turkey. While I am doing all that, you should go and read my new post up over at AlphaMom. 16 things I have learned about being a mother. (which works out to be about one thing per year. By the time my oldest is about 85, I should be close to an expert!
I am typing on my phone because I can’t get the wireless to work on my laptop. Sadly I think I type more efficiently with my thumbs.
