Good As New

dentist

The good news is that he was able to have the tooth fixed without any major invasive dental work. The dentist slapped some bonding material on there and sculpted him a new tooth. The bad news is that due to the size of the chip and the fact that there is a hairline fracture in the tooth, this will be an ongoing dental issue for the rest of his life.

I endedup kneeling on the floor holding his hand for the most of the hour he was in the chair. It wasn’t the pain that upset him, or even the drilling. He hates the novacaine. While he was laying there in his teary state he said he didn’t want to go to school. And asked if he could please stay home with me.

He could have asked for a flying pony and I would have said yes.

We did some errands. Bought him Subway for lunch, where we ran into one of his teachers who was probably wondering why the hell he wasn’t at school. And about that time, after listening to him talk non-stop for 3 hours, I was wondering the same thing. We came home and he played wii. I have discovered that playing video games is not a quiet activity for this child.

Mom, Mom, Mom…. watch this…
Okay.
(A few minutes pass and I look away.)
You missed it! You weren’t looking!
Oh, sorry.
(A few more minutes pass and I look away.)
You missed it again. Why aren’t you watching me?
I was watching. How long am I supposed to look at the tv?
The whole time.

Yeah, not happening.

On the bright side, I have discovered that if you want the day to pass really slowly, just invite my loud, bouncy, never-stops-talking nine year old over for the afternoon. By the time the schoolbus brought the other kids home I was sure it was already Friday.

When I was young, I broke my front tooth by running down the stairs too fast and biting (yes) biting the front door (made of wood). My tooth broke in half. Dentist, made me a cap for my front tooth, which consisted of taking the root out…and putting a post in and theng getting me a temp cap and then finally a permanent one until I was older and I got a nother one, less noticable the one when I was child.
About 10 years ago, I got a nother permanent cap which is more like a real tooth and doesn’t show black under it. So now I can smile big! I’m not sure if I will have to get it replaced later on in life but if I do…well, it’s just a couple visits to get it made and then a visit to the colour matching lab and then another visit to get this one off and the other on…thank GOD for dental plans!

I have one of these chipped front teeth - happened when I was in highschool goofing around with some now long forgotten boy. Now 43, it’s a nuisance to me but has not stopped me from living a full and happy life. And I have not yet let the dentist put a veneer on - I just keep having them slap more of the polymer goo on and zap it with the light.

Ahhh yes a flying pony. Anything impossible can seem to be possible when faced with a suffering child.

  4. Heather's Garden says:

Poor kiddo. He does look like he’s clutching that chair arm for all he’s worth.

  5. Lisa says:

My son did the same thing (via a scooter accident) at about the same age (he’s 16 now). Every now and then the bonded piece will break off - like when he uses his teeth to separate legos - and we’ll have to have a new half tooth put on. Our dentist told us when my son is an adult, he’ll probably just want to get it capped and then he won’t need worry about it anymore.

  6. Lilly says:

Flying pony indeed. I know that feeling. Having his mom by his side and for the whole afternoon must have turned a barely endurable day into a nice one for him.

Togetherness is often over-rated, isn’t it?

  8. Marianna says:

Glad he is better and that he had a great day off school. Why was his teacher not at school?

  9. Kim says:

    Modern dentistry ain’t it great?
I had my front tooth broke off by a good push down the sliding board by my brother……it stayed that way until I became an adult and could pay to have it repaired ( crown) myself.

He’ll probably remember the day he had you all to himself even if he did have to go to the dentist too.

  10. Keyona says:

    The whole time! Hilarious!

  11. Lucinda says:

I’m glad he’s ok but sorry he will have to deal with it for the rest of his life. : (

OMg, that is so true! I hate sick days with my ten-year old! They drag on forever. As much as I love him, I find it just plain boring to be a ten-year-old friend friend for very long.

  13. edj says:

I’ve got one like that too :) Glad his tooth is better!

  14. Brigitte says:

And I bet part of you already cannot comprehend the woman who used to keep all seven at home with her!

Chris says: When we are all home together and have plans it is still easier.

Sounds like the day I spent w/my 9 year old after he had 3 fillings… I really enjoyed the time he spent w/the laughing gas because he was QUIET;)

  17. kate says:

I have a similar dental problem, and a very talkative child who wants me to watch the tiny screen of his DS whenever he is playing. I think I actually feel both of your pain.

  18. Jana says:

    Chris,

I had the same thing happen to my front tooth during a fifth grade gym class…the dentist repaired it with bonding as well and it lasted 20 years. I then had it rebonded and it lasted another 10 years, until I decided to get a veneer instead. BIG MISTAKE!! The veneer has fallen off twice and was 10 times the cost of bonding. I really wish I had just continued to get the bonding redone and kept all that extra money in the bank!

  19. Shannon says:

Is this blondie or his more intense younger brother side kick?

  20. PamS says:

Good and bad news there Chris

I feel bad for him - but aren’t boys funny about the pain thing? He can play football without thought of shedding a tear - he can do something CRAZY enough to break a tooth … but when it comes down to ‘the pain of repair’ or even the pain of novacaine so he doesn’t have pain during repair - he gets teary-eyed.

And when they are ’sick in bed’ they are so pathetic aren’t they? (at least that is how my two boys are)

Ah well, at least he won’t be toothless for any length of time.

  21. Elena says:

Last night I took about six kids…okay, it was actually only four, but seemed more like NINETEEN…to Walmart to buy Halloween costumes~quelle disastre! No need for a costume as my headache was monstrous indeed.

They never show this part of parenting in the commercials, do they?!

  22. Ann says:

Glad it was a son and not your daughter.

  23. Cincy says:

See? He says no to drugs. That’s cool.
