The Last Day

May 27, 2011

Here they are arriving home by bus the school bus at exactly 2:57pm. Summer vacation is finally here. I am not sure who is more excited, them for not having to go to school everyday, or me for not having to get up at 5am and make sandwiches every day. Making lunches was killing me.

Of course now I give it a week before I begin complaining about the door constantly opening and shutting, and all the snacks disappearing at an alarming rate, and never having a moment of peace.

But until that point I am going to be basking in my summer vacation fun. For a whole week.

This photo is from the first day of school, when they were all shiny and clean and excited! Look at them. They are like little sponges.

This photo is from the last day of the school year, after the bus had dropped them off all dirty, sweaty, and in the case of a certain kindergartener, cranky! How dare I ask him to pose for a photo. He has stuff to do.

Not to worry. Once I mentioned being grounded and staying inside until the next school year he perked right up. That is the effective parenting technique that I like to call empty threats.

Maybe perked right up isn’t quite accurate.

Heh. *Love* Happy summer — the lunches kill me, too. So does the door slamming and the snacks disappearing at an alarming rate.

I never thought to take a picture of the last day of school! I think I might steal that idea.

I am mostly impressed that the oldest is wearing the same pair of shoes and they still look good!! Pretty sure by Halloween some years we had shoes held together with duct tape and replacement laces around my house. Let me guess, this is the one who is considerate and cooked his siblings dinner? Oh yeah, I would so not let my kid play with him- give me a freaking break. Are you kidding? That’s the kid I would be begging mine to befriend!!

Chris says: These are not the original sneakers. The last pair is held together now with duct tape and only used for skateboarding.

I am with you on the lunch thing.

That’s exactly how I feel about summer vacation. Although I stop making lunches by December. I just write a check “Here, buy your lunch.” We’re fortunate that the school has fairly good choices for them. It’s nothing worse than he’d pack from home, and is often better, like on days when he eats salad.

Hahaha love it! I, too, am a fan of the empty threat technique. The trick is to actually follow through occasionally, therefore they don’t know when you are actually going to to do it.

The kids are adorable at the beginning and end…but one important questions. How are those red white and blue shoes clean. Did they really make it all year?

    Chris says: Nope, different sneakers.

  8. Claire says:

    Your children are beautiful!

The fact that your 4th grader is wearing the same shoes at the end of the school year & the fact that the shoes still look brand new is an accomplishment…

Chris says: They aren’t the same shoes. He liked them so much they were replaced twice with identical ones. Also, they are school shoes, not playing outside and skateboarding shoes. I’m mean like that.

Can I just say your children have the most gorgeous hair??? WOW! Mine have hair that, when it is long, is either plastered to their heads OR looks like a squirrel’s nest. Hence, they keep it short and keep away the “Did you brush your hair today/yesterday/this year?” comments. And we have one more week of school. Then I will have no more children in elementary school and I am so happy I can’t stand myself. Except then I will have two in the 7th circle of hell known as middle school. Sigh. Have a great Texas summer!

  11. Jo Anne says:

Oh look how they have grown and matured in 9 short (lol) months. Beginning of next school year you need to post the last day photos with first day photos — so we can see how that grow/mature over the summer. Hope your summer is the best.

  12. Cincy says:

Hey! Those shoes look…just kidding. We still have 2 more full days here and 1 glorious hour on Monday. Thanks snow days! Cannot wait to say good-bye to lunch making!

Hope you are having a good time with the kiddos home! I wanted to comment on the other post re: gluten free. What made you go gluten free? I’m asking because it seems to be linked to so many various diseases/issues/lack of energy etc for a lot of people and I’m trying to winnow down whether it is something I should explore. Sorry for the run-on sentence there!
