I Am a Very Lucky Girl

Today is my holy-shit-how-did-I-get-this old birthday. 42. FORTY TWO.

My boyfriend manfriend lovah special friend …what do you call this person in your life when you are no longer a teenager?

This man, he bought the card making supplies so all the kids could make me a card. I had no idea what was going on, though I did think it was odd that everyone suddenly developed an urge to clean their bedrooms.

I turned to him at one point and asked,”What have you done with my children?”

And then after dinner when Miles stood up on his chair and announced, “I am ready to clean my room now!” Well, at that point I thought the children had all been replaced by alien look-a-likes.

Bedtime came and I went upstairs to tuck the little ones into bed. I noticed their rooms didn’t look all that clean. Clearly the only explanation– lying alien look-a-likes.

This morning I got these wonderful cards. And the messages inside of them made me laugh out loud. Two of the kids said they love me even when I yell at them. Two of the kids said that I ROCK! And they are all convinced that I am 24. Bless their non-mathmatical little minds because the elementary school set did not even question how at 24 years old I could have a child only 7.5 years younger than me.

I also got this necklace and ate lunch out with The Man that gave it to me. He is now puttering around the kitchen talking about baking a birthday cake. Not because I like cake. Or because he likes cake. But because my kids want me to have a cake.

Lucky.

Not Quite Extreme

May 3, 2011

The kids saw the show Extreme Couponing on tv about a week ago. They immediately wanted to know why we didn’t clip coupons. I don’t really have an answer for them other than it seems like a giant pain in the ass. And most of the times that I have seen coupons they have been for things that I don’t even buy, like highly processed foods.

I think my kids were fascinated by the show because they saw people with stockplies of soda and cereal and assorted treats.

My teenagers volunteered to have the food stored in their bedrooms, I’m sure with visions of snacking their nights away.

coupon

So this past Sunday I bought a newspaper and the kids happily clipped and sorted coupons.

They came home from school Monday afternoon and immediately asked if I had used any coupons. And you know what? I had!

I used a bunch of coupons at both CVS and Walgreens and came home with lots of deodorant, toothpaste, and razors. And to be honest at CVS they actually paid me money to take stuff home.

The kids were disappointed.

I don’t know why they don’t want to snack on deodorant and toothpaste.
